HURDLER Denisha Cartwright narrowly missed out on a medal to lead Team Bahamas' performances yesterday as athletics and sailing highlighted the country's second day of competition at the 25th Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Cartwright delivered one of The Bahamas' top performances of the day in the women's 100 metres hurdles final, finishing fourth in 12.99 seconds. The Bahamian hurdler crossed the line just 0.36 seconds outside of the podium after advancing through the preliminary rounds earlier in the competition.

Competing against some of the region's best hurdlers, Cartwright remained in contention throughout the race before settling for fourth, earning one of The Bahamas' highest finishes on the track so far at the Games.

The Bahamas also had two male sprinters in semifinal action.

Wendell Miller advanced to the semifinals of the men's 400 metres, where he finished sixth in the opening semifinal, ending his bid for a place in the final.

Ian Kerr also reached the semifinals of the men's 200 metres before placing sixth in his race, bringing his campaign to a close.

While the athletics team chased medals inside the stadium, Team Bahamas also enjoyed a productive day on the water at Salinas Beach, with several sailors positioning themselves for strong finishes as the preliminary races continued.

The standout sailing performance came from the mixed two-person dinghy crew of Mary Nash and Patrick Ryan Tomlinson, who ended yesterday in third place after 10 races. The Bahamian pair compiled 22 net points, placing them in the provisional bronze medal position behind crews from Mexico and Puerto Rico heading into the remaining races.

Joshua Higgins also remained firmly in contention in the men's one person dinghy competition. Higgins closed the day in fourth place after the preliminary races and remains within reach of the leaders as the event continues.

Eliza Denning added another top five showing for Team Bahamas, sitting fifth in the women's one person dinghy standings with 36 net points through the opening 10 races.

In the mixed regional two-person dinghy event, Nash Cartwright and Lori Lowe finished the day in fifth place. The Bahamian crew accumulated 39 net points over the first 10 races and will look to climb the standings when competition resumes.

Joss Knowles rounded out the Bahamian sailing performances, ending the opening day 10th in the men's regional one-person dinghy preliminary standings.

The Bahamas is represented by a 38-member team competing across 10 sports at the Games, with athletes continuing competition over the coming days in pursuit of podium finishes.

After Cartwright's near medal performance and several encouraging results on the water, Team Bahamas will return to action today looking to convert strong early performances into medals as competition intensifies in Santo Domingo.
