A 61-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years in prison last week for attempting to sexually assault his 13-year-old niece in 2024.

The defendant was sentenced before Justice Dale Fitzpatrick after being convicted of attempted incest. His 15-year sentence will reflect time already spent on remand at the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services.

He was also sentenced to three years for indecent assault, to be served concurrently.

The convict reportedly grabbed his niece while she was cleaning a family home in the Family Islands on June 25, 2024. He removed her clothes and sucked her breast before attempting to rape her. The girl resisted, and he stopped after she began to cry.

The man then tried to bribe the girl into silence by giving her $10.

The girl immediately told her grandmother about the assault, and she notified the authorities.

Justice Fitzpatrick admonished the convict for violating the girl’s trust and body.

Vincent Wallace-Whitfield represented the accused, while Janessa Murray and Akire Nichols prosecuted.
