BERTRAM “BJ” Murray Jr continues to make a compelling case that he belongs in the major leagues.

The 26-year-old Bahamian infielder has emerged as one of the International League’s most productive hitters this season for the Triple A Iowa Cubs, putting together the type of consistent offensive campaign that has placed him among the league leaders in several major statistical categories.

Entering this week, Murray was batting .329 to lead the International League while ranking tied for first with 102 hits. His .426 on base percentage ranked third, his .548 slugging percentage was seventh and his 38 extra base hits were tied for third.

The latest numbers continue what has been a breakout season in Iowa after he opened the year with one of the hottest starts in all of Triple A baseball. 

“I just try to stay with my approach every day and not get caught up in results,” Murray said earlier this season after another multi-hit performance. “When you’re consistent with your preparation, everything else usually takes care of itself.” 

That approach has become Murray’s biggest strength.

Rather than relying solely on power, the switch hitter has consistently driven the baseball to all fields and delivered quality at bats from both sides of the plate.

His offensive consistency has become even more impressive considering the depth throughout the Cubs organisation, where competition for major league opportunities remains intense.

Chicago invited Murray to major league spring training before assigning him back to Iowa, giving him valuable experience around the big league club while allowing him to continue his development at Triple A. 

Baseball America continues to rank Murray among the Cubs’ better prospects and describes him as a player with a polished offensive game, while independent Cubs prospect analysts believe his performance has strengthened his chances of eventually reaching Wrigley Field.

“The floor is high enough that he’s sure to make the majors at some point,” one Cubs prospect evaluation noted while adding that Murray possesses more upside than simply becoming a reserve infielder. 

His Iowa manager has repeatedly praised the quality of Murray’s at bats and his ability to produce in key situations, traits reflected throughout the season as he has consistently reached base while driving the baseball for extra bases. During one recent stretch,

Murray collected three hits, three RBIs and scored three runs from the leadoff spot as Iowa continued its push through the International League schedule. 

The former Florida Atlantic standout has steadily climbed through the Cubs’ farm system since being selected in the 15th round of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft.

He earned recognition as a Futures Game selection in 2023 before reaching Triple A, where he has continued refining both his offensive approach and defensive versatility. 

Murray has primarily played third base during his professional career but has also shown the flexibility to handle first base, increasing his value as an organisation player capable of filling multiple roles.

For Bahamian baseball, Murray’s success represents another milestone as he is already regarded as one of the country’s top professional position players, he is now putting together the strongest offensive season of his career against the highest level of minor league competition.

Leading the International League in batting average while sitting near the top in hits, on base percentage and extra base hits is difficult to ignore.

Whether that translates into his first major league promotion, this season will ultimately depend on roster needs in Chicago, but around baseball the belief is growing that Murray has done everything possible to put himself in position for that opportunity.

If he continues producing at his current pace, the next stop in his professional journey may finally be Wrigley Field.
