The battle against land piracy in Exuma

EDITOR, The Tribune.

EXUMA, a land of great beauty purposely designed by God and cherished by the locals and residents alike.  A haven nestled in tranquil beauty has become a hub over the years for land piracy.  Generational lands flipped for a dime and sold for a hog.

Some investors’ intentions are potentially sound, great for business with the people’s best interest at heart. Not only do they invest, but they made the lands their homes, and are loved and welcomed by the locals.

Whilst others come with “deceived perception, no good intentions, personal gains” with proposed plans, big dreams, big ideas, big development and grand employment opportunities, all sounding good to no avail.  No materialisation of the promises, just empty plans, sweet talk, and disappointments.

These so-called investors would stop at nothing to get their desired goals, Our Land.  Their motives and opportunistic ways are to steal the birthright, inheritance, and the generational property at all costs.  These bold investors would sit with your loved ones unbeknownst, especially with the old folks and feed into their thinking, observe the way they live, then speak words of peace and comfort, reassurance, while slowly gaining the trust ‘snake moves’. They would even go as far as taking them on trips to New Providence; all expenses paid, housed them in hotels and wine and dined their way into their minds, painting a beautiful picture.  All lies.

Additionally, they buy their way into the greedy pockets and then bully the process through the network.  Amongst those deceived islanders, Cottage Exuma, a land tenderly cared for, with its unique history and ancient ruins, was raped from the hearts of those who called it home and was upheld by those who swore by the Bible to protect the rights of its citizens, particularly the elderly and the vulnerable from being disadvantaged, injustice and inequality. Prime land originally consisting of 77 acres plus, with three forks peninsula beach shores had no independent legal description nor discussions with the legal lawful offspring, no proper surveying of the land, no acreage Fee simple (generational land in perpetuity), no property assessment/appraisal to determine the real and true honest value of the land. Only what was given and said by the oligopoly: a dime and a so long; I got what I wanted.

This is so disheartening; this has left families distraught, screwed, in tears, broken, and now some deceased.

Who is to protect the sovereignty and rights of our people when we do not speak out or write? There must be a level of loyalty, a willing heart and spirit to help those whom we know do not understand Acreage, Sales, Negotiation, The Process And The Plan Of Deception.

This is a crying shame; whether we like it or not, whether we want to hear it or not, our Justice system is compromised, and cruelty to our people, especially the elderly pearls, is on the rise.

This has to be addressed; this cannot be contained; this is wrong, and before any other family becomes another victim, please ask yourself the question: would you sit by and allow your loved ones to be wronged, to be taken for granted, to be deceived?

KARMA will prevail, good or bad. Cottage Exuma cries for Justice! Written without Prejudice!
