THE annual Geriatric Push-A-Thon is set to return next month, bringing together hundreds of participants in support of healthy aging, mobility, and the wellbeing of senior citizens.
The 15th Annual Geriatric Push-A-Thon will take place on Saturday, July 4, beginning at 6 am at the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre. This year’s event is being held under the theme, “Out of Bed, Full Speed Ahead.”
Hosted by the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre and the Public Hospitals Authority, the Push-A-Thon has become a signature community event designed to encourage physical activity among older adults while raising funds to support patient care and rehabilitation services.
Organisers said the event remains one of the few community initiatives that actively promotes participation by seniors of varying mobility levels, including those who are wheelchair-bound.
Dr Joel Lightbourn, senior house officer at the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre and chairman of the 15th Annual Geriatric Push-A-Thon Committee, said the event highlights the importance of mobility and challenges participants to appreciate the simple ability to move freely.
“This year’s theme, ‘Out of Bed, Full Speed Ahead,’ highlights the importance of mobility, something most of us take for granted,” Dr Lightbourn said during the official launch. “Consider what a blessing it is to be able to get out of bed each day.”
The annual event will feature routes designed to accommodate walkers, runners, wheelchair users, and those pushing participants along the course.
Leotha Coleby, hospital administrator at the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre, said the event serves as more than just a fundraiser.
“The Push-A-Thon is more than an event; it is a celebration of resilience and unity,” she said. “It calls upon our community, our partners and stakeholders to stand together in support of our seniors, empowering them to live with dignity, independence and hope.”
This year’s patron is retired geriatrician Dr Channa Jagadeesh, who was recognised during the launch ceremony for his longstanding contributions to geriatric care and the wider community.
The event has also received strong corporate support. Colina Insurance Limited has returned as title sponsor, contributing $10,000 toward the initiative.
Chantal Horton, manager of corporate communications at Colina Insurance Limited, said the company is proud to continue supporting an event that focuses attention on the nation’s aging population.
“The Geriatric Push-A-Thon not only raises awareness about healthy aging and elderly care, but it also shines a well-deserved spotlight on the seniors in our community who have contributed so much over the years,” she said.
The Push-A-Thon traces its roots back to 2012 when the World Health Organization’s World Health Day theme focused on aging and health under the banner, “Good Health Adds Life to Years.” Inspired by that theme, staff at the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre and Geriatric Hospital sought to create an event that would encourage older adults to remain physically active while also providing an opportunity for those with mobility challenges to participate.
Over the years, the initiative has grown into a highly anticipated annual event, attracting participants, volunteers, healthcare professionals, and corporate partners from across The Bahamas.
Funds raised through the Push-A-Thon support the continued enhancement of services and recreational opportunities for elderly patients at the Geriatric Hospital, including the purchase of equipment used in rehabilitation and patient care.
Organizers are encouraging members of the public to register and participate, noting that every step taken helps support seniors while promoting healthier lifestyles throughout the community.
For many, the event serves as a reminder that healthy aging is not only about living longer, but also about maintaining independence, mobility, and quality of life.
