Cop allegedly stabbed, suspect shot in Café Matisse arson attempt

A POLICE officer allegedly shot a masked man after being stabbed during a suspected arson attempt behind Café Matisse earlier this month, The Tribune understands.

Police have not confirmed or denied whether the incident occurred.

However, The Tribune understands that an officer reported last week that shortly before 2am on Thursday, an officer leaving Central Police Station noticed two men acting suspiciously near the rear of Café Matisse and the BTC building on East Street North.

The men, who were reportedly dressed in dark clothing and wearing ski masks, were seen walking through an alley behind the buildings.

As the officer followed the men, one allegedly ran off while the other allegedly threw a flammable substance onto the roof of Café Matisse and set it alight.

The officer reportedly approached the man, leading to a struggle. During the altercation, the man allegedly stabbed the officer in his right hand.

The Tribune understands that the officer discharged four rounds from his service weapon, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to Princess Margaret Hospital for surgery. The officer was also injured in the incident.

By the time firefighters arrived, rain had reportedly extinguished the fire. The roof of the building sustained minor damage.

The owner and manager of Café Matisse declined to comment when contacted.
