FOR the second consecutive weekend, Devynne Charlton lowered her Bahamian national women’s 100m hurdles record, while Shaunae Miller-Uibo improved on her season’s best performance in the 200m.
The duo both competed at the Xiamen Diamond League meet in China over the weekend, while Grand Bahamian Zion Campbell and LaQuan Nairn highlighted the performances of several Bahamians in action in the United States of America and Anthaya Charlton made her season debut in Germany.
XIAMEN DL
After lowering her national record to 12.38 the week before with her second place behind American Masai Russell (meet record and world-leading time of 12.25) at the Shanghai Diamond League, Charlton finished third in 12.37 for another national record.
Russell ran 12.14 for the victory as she claimed an area record, Diamond League record, meet record and world-leading time, holding off world record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria in 12.28.
Abusan's world record stands at 12.12 that she did at the World Championships at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon on July 24, 2022.
Bahamian Rolando “Lonnie” Greene is the head coach of Charlton, the 28-year-old world indoor 60m hurdles two-time champion and world record holder, and Russell, the 25-year-old Olympic champion, in Lexington, Kentucky.
Greene, the head coach at the University of Kentucky, has predicted that either Charlton or Russell will eventually erase Amusan's record from the book. Charlton's national record stands at 12.38.
Miller-Uibo placed second in her first season's best of 22.26 behind Jamaican Shericka Jackson (22.07) in Shanghai as well, pushing her season's best to 22.04 for another second place in Xiamen.
Jackson stayed ahead of another solid field of competitors with her victory in a meet record and season's best of 21.87. Americans Anavia Battle (22.04) and Sha'Carri Richardson (22.38) both had season's bests for third and fourth and Jenna Prandini rounded out the top five in 22.46. Miller-Uibo, 32, is making her comeback after having her second child. She is concentrating on the 200m this year where she holds the national record at 21.74. Her 400m mark is pegged at 48.36.
