THE University of The Bahamas Mingoes women’s volleyball team snapped a three-game skid after they took down Valkyrie in three straight sets in the New Providence Volleyball Association (NPVA) action at the D.W. Davis Gym on Sunday.
UB won 25-10, 25-10 and 25-11. The win has them sporting a 2-3 win/loss record on the young season.
Davanna Douglas, who stepped into the captain role on the day, led the team in points with 20 points with 15 of those coming on her service. She said they needed this win as she had to step up.
“The girls pulled it together on this game,” Douglas said. “We served, passed, killed and made the improvement from the last three games. Being thrusted into these leadership roles as of late has not been the easiest but it is good and I'm doing my best as the setter and as the captain to fill the shoes of Anjeniker Joseph and Zarria Rose in their absence so it's an honour.”
Patrice Ferguson scored eight points, Hannah McBride had five points and Shaquantay Burrows and Jada Coakley chipped in with four points each.
UB led 5-4 early on in the first set then scored 13 unanswered points on Douglas’ service to lead 18-4. UB went on to lead 21-7 before winning 25-10, They lead 1-0 on sets.
It was another strong start for UB as they went up 8-0 early in the second set. That lead went to 11 points with the score at 21-9 before winning 26-10 to go up 2-0 on sets. UB created separation early on in the third set going up 8-3 as they looked to win in straight sets. They went up 21-10 before closing out the match 25-11 to win 3-0 on sets.
Head coach, Raymond Wilson spoke about mixing up the lineup in this particular match.
“We don't know what personnel we can hold from day-to-day so we try to get as many players into the game so they could get more comfortable with the gameplay,” Wilson said. “So, we changed the lineups around, giving persons the opportunity to play and to adjust and improve their games.”
Wilson and Douglas hope they can build on this win for their next match.
UB will look to make it two straight wins when they face the Ballers at 7.30 pm on Friday, November 6, at the D.W. Davis Gym.
