THE University of The Bahamas Mingoes men’s basketball team stays perfect on the season after picking up two wins on the week in their Basketball Showcase at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.
They took care of the Customs Taxmen 91-41 on Thursday, October 29. They had their toughest battle on Tuesday but came out on top 83-61. They have a 4-0 win/loss record on the season.
Kevaro Russell led the Mingoes with 26 points and Shemeco Albury scored 18 points in the win against the Taxmen.
“It was a great team win,” Russell said. “It was a chance for us to come out and work on our offence, defence and execution. We were able to get some guys come off the bench and get some confidence as we head deeper into the season.”
UB went up 16-7 with 2:02 left in the first quarter. They used a 7-2 run to lead 23-9 at the end of the first quarter. UB used a 22-0 run to take full control of the game in the second quarter when they went up 45-9 with just over a minute left in the first half.
The first half ended with UB up 45-14.
UB coasted in the third and fourth quarter to secure the 91-41 win.
Tuesday’s matchup saw Russell and Albury leading the way for UB once again with 24 points and 23 points respectively. Russell had six steals.
“Our defence was the best part of the game along with getting the rebounds,” Albury said. “We know that we were the smaller team so we had to crash the boards and that helped us a lot with the win. We had heart over height.”
It was a strong start in the first quarter as UB got out to a strong 7-0 start. Heatwave was able to make it a competitive game as UB led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Lyron Elliot made a layup to give UB the 28-18 lead – their largest of the game at that point. Heatwave managed to tie it up at 28 points apiece with 4:12 left in the second quarter. It was a battle to end the second quarter but UB led 35-34.
UB was able to get some separation when Albury connected from deep with 4:45 left in the third quarter to give UB the 49-42 lead. Russell had a 5-0 run of his own to put his side up 60-44 with 1:46 remaining in the third quarter. UB led 62-47 at the end of the third quarter to take control of the game. A 21-14 fourth quarter helped UB to hold on to win the game 83-61. Next up for UB is the Homecoming game against the Rebels scheduled for 8pm on Friday, November 13 at Loyola Hall.
