Second man in market street shooting dies

A 22-YEAR-OLD man shot on John Road last week has died in hospital, turning the attack into a double killing.

Medical staff told police on Friday that the man, who was shot in the lower back, had died while being treated. He had been in critical condition and undergoing surgery after the shooting. His name has not been released.

Renaldo Curry, 42, was shot several times and died at the scene.

The two men were among a group gathered near a food establishment on John Road at about 11.30pm on Wednesday when two masked men in dark clothing rode up on a scooter from the direction of Market Street and opened fire, police said. The gunmen fled west towards Baillou Hill Road. ShotSpotter technology detected the gunshots.

Curry's family said he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. His sister, Desiree Curry, said he had lived on the street all his life and that the family had never known him to be involved in criminal activity, gang disputes or threats. He worked as a security guard and carpenter and was the father of two sons, aged 14 and four.

"He's an innocent man," Ms Curry said. "They took him from his family, his kids."
