A 19-YEAR-OLD man has been charged with the attempted murder of Anatol Rodgers High School student Deontae Wright, who was shot multiple times at Englerston Park last week after a gunman asked whether he had any marijuana.

Cortez Anderson is also accused of attempting to kill a female student who was with the 14-year-old at the park around 11am on September 28.

Deontae underwent about seven hours of surgery for injuries including wounds to both lungs and was placed in a medically induced coma, The Tribune reported last week.

Prosecutors allege Anderson, dressed in black and riding a black moped, approached the pair and asked if they had any marijuana. When the boy said no, Anderson allegedly pulled out a handgun and tried to fire at them, but the gun malfunctioned twice.

It is alleged he then cleared the weapon and fired several shots at the boy, who was hit multiple times as he tried to run and collapsed. Anderson fled the scene on the moped, it is alleged. The girl was not injured.

Anderson appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Ancella Evans on two counts each of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life. He was not required to enter a plea.

He was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until January 21, 2027, when he is due to be served with a voluntary bill of indictment sending his case to the Supreme Court. He was told he has the right to apply for bail in the higher court.
