DONTE “Drey” Deveaux was sentenced to 35 years in prison yesterday for murdering one man and attempting to kill another during a shooting at a Coconut Grove carwash in 2022.

Deveaux, 29, was convicted of killing 34-year-old Emmanuel “Manny” Brown and attempting to murder Samuel “Fish” Joseph at a carwash on Seventh Street on the night of May 2, 2022.

Justice Jeannine Weech-Gomez imposed the sentence and informed Deveaux that the time he had already spent on remand would be reflected in his sentence.

His sentencing was delayed several times because his attorney, Dr K Melvin Munroe, was absent, including during the latest proceedings.

Deveaux was convicted last November after a jury returned 8-1 guilty verdicts on both counts following two hours of deliberations.

During the trial, Joseph testified that Deveaux had borrowed $10 from him earlier that night.

Joseph said he was later attacked as he tried to leave after the money had been repaid. He testified that Deveaux pressed a gun against his temple before shooting him four times, causing injuries to his jaw and eye.

Before his death, Brown reportedly identified “Drey” as the gunman to Officer Sands and begged police not to let him die.

Deveaux denied involvement in the shooting, telling police during his record of interview that he had been with his girlfriend at the time.

Before jurors delivered their verdicts, Justice Weech-Gomez informed them that Deveaux had no previous convictions and had been considered of good character up to that point.

Calnan Kelly, Tenielle Bain and Timothy Bailey prosecuted the case.
