Woman dies after being found unresponsive in sanctuary waters

AN 80-year-old American woman died after she was found unresponsive in the water at a Grand Bahama marine sanctuary park on Wednesday, after she and her daughter-in-law reportedly declined life vests offered to them by staff.

According to a preliminary police report, shortly after noon on October 7, the women entered the water at different locations at the park off Sterling Circle.

The daughter-in-law later noticed her mother-in-law unresponsive and face down in the water and alerted staff, who promptly responded and removed the woman from the water.

Staff immediately began lifesaving measures until Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived and transported the woman to hospital.

She was initially admitted for observation but later died shortly before 10pm while receiving medical treatment.

Police said information provided by the deceased’s daughter-in-law indicated that upon their arrival at the park, they were briefed by staff and offered life vests, which they declined.

Detectives later visited the hospital and examined the woman. At this time, police said they observed no signs of foul play.
