The Girls’ Brigade of The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands is launching a strategic initiative to modernise its programmes for today’s young women. The new direction was introduced during the organisation’s annual general meeting held last week at Girls’ Brigade House, Dolphin Drive.
Building on nearly seven decades of character development, the new leadership team is focused on expanding accessibility and regional reach. Key plans include launching online platforms for leader and youth training across the islands, updating traditional uniforms for local climate conditions, and refreshing curriculum to address modern challenges like online safety and mental wellness.
Newly installed National President Candice Turnquest emphasised that adaptability and community outreach are central to the movement’s future. Turnquest, who joined the 16th Nassau Company at age seven and later founded the first Girls’ Brigade company on Andros, highlighted the need to evolve while staying true to the core mission.
"Resilience is comprised of both strength and adaptability," said President Turnquest. "As we lean into adapting to the world around us, my hope is that this evolution inspires former Brigaders to reengage and re-energise our network, while also attracting young women and families who are seeking a strong, Christ-centred organisation to call home."
She also commended immediate past president Jennie McDonald for guiding the organisation through the disruptions of the pandemic while maintaining its vital community outreach to elderly and children’s homes. McDonald will continue her service in a key governance capacity as Executive Director to the Board of Trustees.
Among the new executives installed was Archdeacon Keith Cartwright, who assumes the role of National Chaplain. Archdeacon Cartwright, who officiated the service, expressed enthusiasm for his appointment.
"Serving as National Chaplain of the Girls’ Brigade is a privilege and a joy," he said. "I encourage all of our girls and leaders to do their very best as we work together to take this organisation from strength to strength."
As the Girls’ Brigade embarks on this transformative period, leadership invites former members, parents, and community partners across the region to reconnect and follow the organisation’s Facebook page for upcoming programs and volunteer opportunities.
The Girls’ Brigade is an international, interdenominational organisation dedicated to empowering young women through Christian values, leadership training, life skills, and community service.
