A CUSTOMS officer is facing trial after being accused of sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl he helped raise after allegedly giving her alcohol in 2023.
The 42-year-old man, whose name is being withheld to protect the minor’s identity, appeared before Justice Loren Klein yesterday as a nine-member jury was empanelled for his trial on a charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with a dependent.
Although evidence was expected to begin yesterday, the first witnesses are now scheduled to testify next week. Prosecutors allege that the defendant gave the girl alcohol while she was in his custody in New Providence on September 9, 2023, before having sexual intercourse with her while she was intoxicated.
