The Bahamas Association of Administrative Professionals (BAAP) gave employees and employers alike a reminder of their rights and responsibilities under employment law by recently examining key provisions governing the workplace.

The issue was explored by BAAP members and guests during the association’s monthly meeting, which featured a presentation by Marianne Cadet, chief counsel at the Office of the Public Defender and treasurer of BAAP.

Ms Cadet gave a presentation entitled ‘The seven myths of Employment Law: What the law really says’. She provided an overview of the Employment Act, which establishes the legal framework governing workplace relationships in The Bahamas.

Ms Cadet outlined a number of hypothetical workplace situations, inviting members and guests to discuss the possible outcomes based on legal provisions.

Among the key areas discussed were severance pay, summary dismissal, maternity leave, unfair dismissal and sick leave, providing attendees with valuable insight into both employee rights and employer responsibilities. The presentation reinforced the importance of understanding employment legislation and knowing the rights and responsibilities that apply in the workplace.

Members expressed their appreciation for the timely and informative session. “I felt that the presentation was very informative and timely, as the discussion highlighted the importance, in depth, of the Employment Act and the rights of both the employer and employee,” BAAP programme and education chairperson, Mark Barrett, said.
