A 27-YEAR-OLD man was remanded to prison on Friday accused of causing the death of a police corporal who was struck while escorting a funeral on Prince Charles Drive and later told his brother from his hospital bed that he was suffering the “worst pain” he had ever felt.
Jesucoeur Alcy is charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection with the September 12 crash that killed Corporal Steven Duncombe, 37.
Prosecutors allege Alcy was driving a Suzuki east along Prince Charles Drive at about 1.45pm when he attempted to turn right onto Garden Road and collided with Duncombe’s motorcycle.
Duncombe, a Royal Bahamas Police Force Traffic Division officer, was travelling west and escorting a funeral at the time.
He was conscious and speaking after the crash but died from his injuries two days later.
His younger brother, Ramon Burnside, said Duncombe spoke to him from his hospital bed before undergoing surgery.
“He was talking when I spoke to him,” Mr Burnside said. “He said he don’t wish this pain on anyone. He said this is the worst pain he had ever felt.”
Mr Burnside said Duncombe never regained consciousness after surgery.
“After the surgery,” he said, “he never woke up.”
Mr Burnside said his mother called him after the crash and urged him to get to the hospital.
Alcy was not required to enter a plea when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Ancella Evans.
He was informed that the vehicular manslaughter case would proceed to the Supreme Court by voluntary bill of indictment.
Inspector Deon Barr objected to bail, saying Alcy, who is Haitian, was in The Bahamas on a work permit and posed a risk of absconding because he was not a permanent resident.
Alcy was denied bail and remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until November 26, when he is due to be served with the voluntary bill of indictment.
