A 35-year-old immigration officer was shot and hospitalised after police said he reversed a car towards an officer during a road check in Chippingham yesterday morning.
Police said officers were conducting a road check on Dunmore Avenue shortly before 9am when they stopped a white Toyota Passo occupied by a man and woman.
The driver was asked to produce identification and vehicle insurance but told officers he had neither, according to police. He instead handed over his Department of Immigration identification.
Police said that while officers were making further inquiries, the man got back into the vehicle and allegedly reversed aggressively towards an officer standing behind it.
The officer, who police said feared for his life, drew his service weapon and fired in the driver’s direction.
The man then drove away, leaving the female passenger behind.
Police searched for the vehicle and driver but were initially unable to locate them.
Shortly afterwards, officers were informed that the man had arrived at hospital suffering from gunshot wounds.
