A JUDGE directed a jury to acquit a man accused of attempting to murder two police officers on Quakoo Street in 2022 after finding there was insufficient evidence to convict him.
Justice Jeannine Weech-Gomez instructed the nine-member jury to return not guilty verdicts on Jeremy Dames’ two counts of attempted murder and two counts of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.
Prosecutors alleged Dames, 34, attempted to kill Corporal 3333 Precious Lewis and Superintendent Dwight Smith with a black and blue .40-calibre pistol near Quakoo Street on January 19, 2022.
Justice Weech-Gomez told jurors she had heard legal arguments in their absence and, after reviewing the evidence at its highest, found that it could not properly support a conviction.
During testimony the previous day, Cpl Lewis said she heard a suspect fire a weapon near her family home and witnessed an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and another officer.
However, she was unable to identify the suspect, saying he was wearing a mask.
Dames was discharged and told he was free to go, provided he had no other matters before the court.
He left the courtroom following his acquittal.
