A 47-year-old man was remanded to prison yesterday after being accused of raping and assaulting a 41-year-old woman at a Yametto Drive residence last week and threatening to kill her if she reported the attack.
Cheguvera Moxey was not required to enter a plea to charges of rape, assault with intent to commit rape and threats of death when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Ancella Evans.
Prosecutors allege Moxey attacked the woman at about 9.30am on September 21 while she was working as a caregiver for two children.
Moxey, who was the boyfriend of the woman’s employer, allegedly entered the residence, locked the door and pushed the complainant against a refrigerator before sexually assaulting her.
The woman reported that Moxey threatened to kill her if she told anyone about the incident.
During the alleged attack, her employer’s mother arrived at the residence and Moxey allegedly forced the complainant into a bathroom.
The woman later escaped from the house and ran outside, where Moxey allegedly tried to force her back inside.
Prosecutors allege she resisted and Moxey struck her about the body during the struggle before leaving in his vehicle.
A neighbour who is a police officer assisted the complainant and contacted one of her relatives to help overcome a Creole language barrier.
The woman subsequently received medical attention.
Moxey was told that the case would proceed to the Supreme Court by voluntary bill of indictment and that he could apply to the higher court for bail.
He was remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until November 26, when the voluntary bill of indictment is due to be served.
Inspector Deon Barr prosecuted the case.
