The Bahamas Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA) yesterday named Robert Sands, the senior Baha Mar executive, as its interim president following Jackson Weech’s appointment as tourism’s director-general.

The Association, in a statement, said Mr Sands, who is its immediate past president, will hold the post until the December 2, 2026, election of its officers and directors takes place at the annual general meeting (AGM).

Mr Sands will replace Mr Weech, who was elected BHTA president in December 2024, after he relinquished the post following his appointment as the Ministry of Tourism’s director-general.

The Baha Mar senior vice-president of government and external affairs has served previously served five terms as BHTA president, covering a total of ten years, dating back to 1990.

“First and foremost, we are very proud of Jackson Weech. He served and led our organisation with competence, consideration, resolution and a keen awareness of the potential that resides in the people he worked amongst. We look forward to working with him collaboratively in his new capacity,” Mr Sands said.

“As expressed, we see Jackson Weech’s appointment as an astute decision made by the Ministry of Tourism. We believe it will further strengthen our working relationship with Ministry of Tourism as we aim to achieve common goals and best enable the growth, development and prosperity of our tourism industry.
