The_Oracle 11 years ago on QC demands new Port ownership

While it is true the Port Authority private owners are comfortable and wealthy with no vision or need to do anything, this was not the intention of the H.C.A. for Wallace Groves or the Government. The Government buying it is not the answer either as they're broke and couldn't run it anyway. One look at Nassau confirms that. What should be done is a buyout by the Licensees, who have watched things go from bad to worse and would probably do a far better job if politics could be kept out of it! Middle management simply holding whatever position the owners want them to is pathetic. Hutchinson could care less aside needing enough manpower to run the Container port. Even then they'd get approval to import foreign workers, who would live in shipping containers outside the gates! Government is using VAT rules to abrogate the H.C.A. and totally ignore prior court rulings which have helped to define it, which will further depress economic prospects and with impending expiry from tax exemptions in 2015 things do not look good. Freeport is the perfect example of squandered potential, through the inactions of a select few, who themselves have done very very well at the expense of everyone else.

Stapedius 11 years ago on Probe of 'abuse' by Immigration

Install the cameras post haste and let there not be any mistake that we take our border security seriously. While we all agree that there should be a humane and decent approach to this it must be said that the officers are not always faced with pleasant situations. I would imagine that the environment can become quite hostile and some force is used in apprehension. Now justifiable force is debatable. But we have to really make sense of what we are calling abuse. The reality is many people do not go peacefully. There have been reports of officers being spat on, having objects thrown at them etc. So I would absolutely agree that cameras would clear up a lot of the ambiguity of what is being called abuse. If there is evidence to support abuse or mistreatment by all means those responsible should be held to account.

The simple issue is our cost to live in the country is too high. But many of us eye too big and watch what others have and try do the same. Our banking system does need an overhaul though. It is archaic and slow moving. Service is poor and the product is shabby.

The Bahamas Bar is full of lazy, incompetent lawyers. It is their incompetence which clogs up the system. They go to court unprepared, and cases are adjourned until though kingdom come. There needs to be penalties when these folks show up Ill prepared. They should pay court administrative fees. Then when you look at some cases like divorce I wonder why it takes forever for a divorce? It is simply because lawyers play games to milk clients dry. The collude and scheme to make as much money as they can. Watch them good. Its a social club and their only goal is to do the least work for the most pay. No real advocacy in what they do. They just want to play big shots around town. The young lawyers are the worst. No real skill and have not practiced their craft. Title grabbers that's all they are.

Stapedius 11 years ago on Xenophobia in the Bahamas: Haitian Ambassador addresses Fred Mitchell

I like how illegal immigrants always want to take the moral high road. Haitian ambassadors never feel the need to address the deplorable human conditions in Haiti. The corruption and poor governance is in large part the issue there. Nobody wants to address the poor race relations within Haiti but they are highly critical of the Bahamas and talk of education campaigns. Why not educate Haitians on building their economy, family planning and what it means to stop revolting at every dislike. It's a revolving door of poverty and political instability in Haiti and everyone is being to politically correct about it. We as a people do not wish Haiti or its citizens any harm. We are simply saying as Bahamians that we should not be made to feel guilty for the failure of the Haitian government to protect the interest of its people. In fact, we should be proud of our own leadership that includes the opposition for once standing together to protect our interests. Now if you call stopping illegal immigration xenophobia then so be it.

ThisIsOurs 11 years ago on SUSPENDED BUT PRESIDENT BLAMES RIVAL FACTION

Based on the union rules, did she do anything that warranted suspension? I cannot believe the gall of this woman or her supporters. As far as I can see the union never said she did anything illegal, so her argument that she "didn't do anything illegal" is DECEPTIVE at best. Then she goes on in an attempt to bend justice by insinuating that people should ~vote for her supporters on the appeals committee I suppose so the outcome would more likely be in her favour. What kind of shenanigans is this over control of the union funds??? Those poor blind teachers who cannot see through that. And we wonder why Renward Wells went unpunished for so long? Here it is, our people see nothing short of murder as anything to be punished for. They don't have a clue what "unethical" or "unprofessional" mean. Soon enough some pastor or bishop will stand up to say what sweet loving person she is and that they are 100% behind her with absolutely no acknowledgement that she did anything untoward. Look at Ms Sabrina, she vows to fight cyber bullying but says nothing about fighting against the scourge of overly sexual preteens and teenagers or the over sexualization of children in the Bahamas. She brands herself the victim with 3000 people telling her she is right and to keep her head high. Then we wonder why our rape numbers are so high. Renward told us that he wouldn't dishonour Myles Munroe as if Myles Munroe had anything to do with his boldly unethical behaviour.

Their modus operandi is always the same, and here we go again, another public figure caught in a mess, riling up dumb Bahamians to fight blindly behind them. As a friend told me, in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king

Stapedius 11 years ago on Louby Georges: I have not been anti-Bahamian

Actions speak louder thanks words is correct. So the action that Bahamians of Haitian decent should take is to discourage members of the community from harboring illegals. If you believe in the Bahamas then believe in its laws. With laws there comes an enforcement component which in the event there is no voluntary compliance active enforcement must be carried out. Yes, humanity and decency is of the highest priority in all matters but there is so much unsubstantiated claims that have not provided evidence in support. Again we as a people have no ill will towards Haiti. In fact I think most Bahamians would be happy if the country ststabilized. So we have many detractors and critics but would Louby be able to say similar things in Haiti against the Haitian government? Probably not. We have free airwaves and freedom of assembly and the freedom to think what we like. I thank God to be Bahamian and I'm not a shame to say it.

Stapedius 10 years, 12 months ago on Deputy PM hits out at 'corporate sabotage'

Poor union leadership. The problem with the unions in this country is that their brains appear to be too minute for good sense. How could the pilots of a financially failing airline which is subsidised by the taxpayers of this country think its ok to strike? The same goes for BEC. Your pay is by far higher than majority of Bahamians and yall want play the @$#. Simply put we should close the airline and let them look elsewhere for work. The leader of this action should have more sense to know how to handle these siruations. Again, a failing airline, with poor service and subsidized. Three strikes you're out. No more games with people who feel entitled. Public support is a b/@#$ and you have to know what angle to take to get the right result. The Bahamian public is pissed and rightfully so.

Stapedius 10 years, 11 months ago on Junkanoo cut to a single lap

Our inability to get junkanoo to where it should be says a lot about us as a people. A cultural parade which is only in part expresses who we are we can't seem to properly plan. I agree with several of the posters that cutting the laps doesn't solve the problem. Getting the groups to bay seems to be the major hold up. So perhaps there needs to be more assistance and logistics planning by the njcp in helping all groups get to Bay. We all recognize that the large groups have greater financial resources and may not require as much aid as the B groups. But there is no reason why groups like the Fancy Dancers and Prodigal Sons be heavily penalized. The NPJC has screwed tthe season's parades up. First they create doubts and uncertainty with scores and now this. The management are too laid back and don't run the operation like a business. They really should be finding avenues to promote, and make as much money from the parade as possible. On the internet the advertising is poor. Hardly any social media hype. The videos from parades should be vivid and HD on YouTube etc getting maximum exposure.Get with it people.

Stapedius 10 years, 11 months ago on KKK style protest at Junkanoo parade a 'national disgrace' says Smith

Agreed. As much as Smith annoys me this is clearly wrong. We need a measured response to things in our country. We can voice our concerns and opposition to policies or social issues but there needs to be careful what we say. Fred Smith has himself made some outlandish and stupid remarks about the government and he too should practice reservation in speaking wildly before thinking.

A donkey he is, as described before. I put the PM, Fred Smith, Rodney Moncur and a few others in a special category. Had a professor who would say "your cerebrum is globally confused." He was politely saying stop being a dumba@$. I relay these sentiments to the PM. WTF 'black party?' Would the PLP please have the good sense and the balls to elect a new leader. We are too emotional in these political parties. We take things too personally. Perry has done his time and his rhetoric is beyond annoying. He is slow moving, decrepit in his ability to get this country moving economically and simply out of date. This is the exact reason young people don't want to vote for either party. These guys just won't clear off and let a transition take place within these parties and the country. Even the 'so called retirees' getting media coverage. Just go away and sit down.

Stapedius 10 years, 11 months ago on PM plans to ask China for funds

Spare the bull$#it. The Bahamas has been borrowing money for many years. Where do you think IDB/World Bank funds come from? Now we may not agree with who we are borrowing from and thats fair. But let us stop pretending as if we haven't been here before. We cry about borrowing but many of us the same ones who don't want to pay any tax. Now I'm not saying we should drown ourselves in debt, but in case many of you haven't noticed we are already in the shit. When we get defense force vessels, equipment etc from the US you think its free? Hell no. There's a price to be paid. It may not be in currency but there is a price. Countries borrow all the time this is nothing new. We just have to be disciplined enough to settle the debt. The US went all over Europe after the war of Independence to borrow money from then wealthy European nations. John Adams was principally tasked as an ambassador to seek out funding. We have to stop being overly dramatic about everything and try to navigate our way through crisis.
