EV battery fires, are we ready?

Lithium batteries … they can catch fire … what if my neighbour has an EV car which catches fire and causes fire damage to my property? What if he adds a electricity battery unit, lithium, to his solar panels? Electric bikes same. I hear certain Insurance providers are refusing to cover anything EV.

Strong objection to PI Wendy’s

Comfort Suites Paradise Island strongly object to the conversion of the former Scotia Bank building to Wendy’s and Marco’s Pizza fast food restaurants. It is indeed our position that tranquil exclusive resort haven of Paradise Island will be negatively impacted by additional fast-food outlets.

PITDA is opposed to Wendy’s

The Paradise Island Tourism Development Association (PITDA) and its member hotels and partners – Atlantis Paradise Island, Bay View Suites Paradise Island, Comfort Suites Paradise Island, Paradise Island Beach Club, The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort, Paradise Landing, and Ocean Club Estates – strongly oppose the development and opening of Wendy’s and Marco’s Pizza on Paradise Island.

By-election a pivotal moment

In the poignant absence left by MP Obadiah Wilchcombe, the constituency of Grand Bahama, Bimini, and the Berry Islands finds itself enveloped in a vital democratic process - the bye-election.

Concerns of BTVI faculty

I am writing to bring to your immediate attention the pressing concerns and frustrations faced by the faculty at the Bahamas Technical & Vocational Institute (BTVI). Despite signing our Industrial Agreement (IA) on July 7th, 2023, we are in an ongoing battle with BTVI’s management, severely impacting our working conditions and morale.

Customs overreach

Please permit me to express my views on the recently introduced “customs exempt app” which I was required to upload and populate on my return to my country of citizenship.

Now deal with signs and shacks

If I might piggy back on the resounding result of the Atlantis Aerodrome town hall meeting on Tuesday night. I have never heard people speak so passionately against what was being proposed and I actually had the feeling that what they felt about Fort Montagu is that it is a sacred place.

Take your own advice, Mitchell

In politics and life, self-awareness is often the hardest but most essential virtue. It’s this very virtue that the respected chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), Mr Fred Mitchell, recently invoked when commenting on the importance of former public figures recognising when it’s time to move on. It’s both ironic and poignant that Mr Mitchell, having turned 70 and holding the dual roles of chairman of the PLP and Minister of Foreign Affairs, seems not to apply this wisdom to his own situation.

Raise the standard of debate

The heckling and shoutings, the uncontrolled roars of laughter, the constant interruptions poorly disguised as “points of order”, are all evidence of a precipitous decline in the quality of debate within our parliament over the years.

Finlayson tribute

It was August 24th 1947 when in the heart of the valley on the island of New Providence a bouncing baby boy was born to the late Alpheus Finlayson, Sr, and Dianna Finlayson (nee Deveaux). They named him Alpheus Alexander Finlayson, Jr.

Mitchell concern

I am writing to express deep concern and indignation over the recent statement issued by chairman Fred Mitchell of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) regarding the West Grand Bahama candidacy. It is not just the vagueness and ambiguity of the statement that is troubling, but the apparent overt deviation from constitutional and democratic norms.

Just say ‘no’ to Atlantis water drome

I refer to a published Notice of a meeting to be held this evening (October 10) at Queen’s College, hosted by Atlantis, who are seeking government and public support for establishment of a water drome in Montagu Bay to operate seaplanes.

‘Paradise’ has highest inequality

“Paradise.” A phrase echoed by many, especially tourists visiting The Bahamas. With our sun-kissed sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue seas, our islands have continued to live up to its international reputation as a bastion of beauty.

Wilchcombe was an ideal politician

I WAS shocked to have learned of what I consider to be the most untimely death of the late Hon. Obediah Hercules Wilchombe, the former MP for West End and Bimini. “Obie”, as he was affectionately and universally known, was the consummate politician and “servant” of the people of The Bahamas. As a very energetic individual, he was a prime example of what the ideal politician should be for his constituents. He served well and will, I am sure, be sorely missed.

A tribute to a fine man, Obie

“The passing of Obediah Hercules Wilchcombe shocks Bahamian Community.”
