Now deal with signs and shacks
If I might piggy back on the resounding result of the Atlantis Aerodrome town hall meeting on Tuesday night. I have never heard people speak so passionately against what was being proposed and I actually had the feeling that what they felt about Fort Montagu is that it is a sacred place.
Take your own advice, Mitchell
In politics and life, self-awareness is often the hardest but most essential virtue. It’s this very virtue that the respected chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), Mr Fred Mitchell, recently invoked when commenting on the importance of former public figures recognising when it’s time to move on. It’s both ironic and poignant that Mr Mitchell, having turned 70 and holding the dual roles of chairman of the PLP and Minister of Foreign Affairs, seems not to apply this wisdom to his own situation.
Raise the standard of debate
The heckling and shoutings, the uncontrolled roars of laughter, the constant interruptions poorly disguised as “points of order”, are all evidence of a precipitous decline in the quality of debate within our parliament over the years.
Finlayson tribute
It was August 24th 1947 when in the heart of the valley on the island of New Providence a bouncing baby boy was born to the late Alpheus Finlayson, Sr, and Dianna Finlayson (nee Deveaux). They named him Alpheus Alexander Finlayson, Jr.
Mitchell concern
I am writing to express deep concern and indignation over the recent statement issued by chairman Fred Mitchell of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) regarding the West Grand Bahama candidacy. It is not just the vagueness and ambiguity of the statement that is troubling, but the apparent overt deviation from constitutional and democratic norms.
Just say ‘no’ to Atlantis water drome
I refer to a published Notice of a meeting to be held this evening (October 10) at Queen’s College, hosted by Atlantis, who are seeking government and public support for establishment of a water drome in Montagu Bay to operate seaplanes.
‘Paradise’ has highest inequality
“Paradise.” A phrase echoed by many, especially tourists visiting The Bahamas. With our sun-kissed sandy beaches and crystal-clear blue seas, our islands have continued to live up to its international reputation as a bastion of beauty.
Wilchcombe was an ideal politician
I WAS shocked to have learned of what I consider to be the most untimely death of the late Hon. Obediah Hercules Wilchombe, the former MP for West End and Bimini. “Obie”, as he was affectionately and universally known, was the consummate politician and “servant” of the people of The Bahamas. As a very energetic individual, he was a prime example of what the ideal politician should be for his constituents. He served well and will, I am sure, be sorely missed.
A tribute to a fine man, Obie
“The passing of Obediah Hercules Wilchcombe shocks Bahamian Community.”
Govt needs to redo road works
LYFORD Cay Road approaching shopping centre … yes, you raised the road to avoid flooding work including asphalting very, very sub-standard … again please Public Works make the contractor remake.
Speech a re-run of Pindling era
Speech from The Throne a day after. Slept on the images and speech … 2000 people assembled and you could hear a needle drop throughout the speech, the lack of applause was stunning, the politicos and PR folks must have shuddered in their shoes.
‘Things are good’ is fake news
This is a letter to the editor of both The Guardian and The Tribune, our major Bahamian newspapers. Recently, we have heard the widespread accusations of Fake News against the major global news organisations, such as Fox News. Fox just lost a major court case, ordered to pay over $787,000,000 in damages for their sins.
Withdraw planning application
I read with interest the comments of Oniel Khosa, owner of the Stone’s Throw Away hotel, regarding his proposed development of a grocery store and café (and “F&B, etc” whatever that means) in a low-density, quaint, residential area.
Insanely light gun sentence
In July, a couple in the Cayman Islands were sentenced to 11.5 and 10 years respectively for being found with a single firearm in their apartment.
In solidarity
We write to state our solidarity with our small community (Gambier Heights and Tropical Gardens) in its contest of the proposed expansion of A Stone’s Throw Away development which will incur a rezoning of our quiet residential space to commercial.
