People comfort each other at the scene.

Four people have died and four others have been injured in a drive-by shooting in Freedom Park, Fox Hill.

Gunmen opened fire from a car around 6pm.

Commissioner Greenslade, while i know you're overwhelmed by the criminals in this country, you should at least have the guts to admit that you're out of your element. The only line these murderers know is the war line and they're not going to stop because the know you're soft and out of your league. Maybe you should resign because you have no control over this crime. I was held up at gunpoint on August Monday and shot at while crashing my car and having to run for my life and the police would not even come to the scene. The bandits went towards the police station and 5 prison overseers saw what happened and called the police and their response to me was i need to come to the station and make a report. That's the last i heard of the incident. I am confident that many more matters like my incident is swept under the rug.

Is there a gun store somewhere that sells handguns because it feels like everyone has one

2

Mr. Greenslade, How many lines have been drawn now? @MarkTa Simply arming Bahamians with guns is ludacris. You think its out of hand now? Everyone will become savages and the Criminals will have even more guns. Remember guns dont kill people. People kill People. There are better ways to go about this, the Po Po's are doing what they can, i guess. Corruption is evident everywhere in almost every business and/or institution. To keep the numbers down in crime is ultimately up to people themselves and how the government is treating them and these so called laws that are not being followed. Hanng dese fellas! Dey killing us, we could kill dem too. This goes hand in hand. Crime cannot be stopped, it can only be controlled and/or regulated.

You know these animals are "well know to the police" and they are on BAIL for murder. The Judiciary has failed this country for far to long. When the "bad boys" have no fear and they know they will beat the system there is no hope. If we continue as we have there is no future for this country. Time to get real with these punks and start hanging, why should the majority live in fear and have no life or hope because of a lost few. HANG THEM AND BE DONE WITH THEM AND THEIR TERROR!

The good people of the Bahamas are losing control of their country to mindless anarchy. Your governments are only interested in lining their own pockets. Vote them out. You need to start from scratch in the education system to teach all the children what it takes to be a good productive citizen,..that violent behaviour will not be tolerated.

...anyway, that's my two cents worth, from a Snowbird who loves the Bahamas and the Bahamian people.

It is a shame to see such a small Island like Nassau be destroyed by punks. Not even 200000 people on this little Nassau and the Police can't control this BS. But it is not the Police.

The PM has fail the people, The FNM has fail the people, The uneducated police department has fail the people, The School system has fail the people, The Judiciary has fail the people, The prison system has fail the people, The Minister of National Security has fail the people, If these stinking punks could rob the Deputy PM then who are the common citizens in this little island. This is just ridiculous, it makes me sick to my stomach. The PM go smile up and down and travel the world and he cant't solve problems in a little island.

But guess what its none of the people faults that I mentions above, if the stupid people in this country sit back and continue to vote the same ignorant old idiots back into power time and time again then they deserve everything they get. I live in the US and my city which is very small has more people than Nassau and there is control. People wake up, if you government has fail you it is in your constitution to get rid of them and form a new government.

It so amazing that a machine gun was used in this crime. Where did this gun came from? Bahamas Customs, Bahamas Immigration how is it these weapons entering the country? My condolences to the families

1

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 3 months ago

Machine gun? 3 high profile crimes within the span of a month...DPM, east Bay St, congested Fox Hill roundabout..BJ needs to resign, seriously. The PM and DPM should too. while they're at it, just call an election they're playing at governing right now, they were never ready, they did not prepare, not for day-1, and they will never catch up not even on day-1825

Dem same webshops built on a foundation of gun running and human trafficking where the police couldn't find any evidence of anything illegal. Not even the innocent looking spinning wheel on the wall.

The commissioner is to blame as well, you let politics drag you down a road where you should not be. Crime is crime. You should be independent. The only time BJN allows you to be is when the stink blows up in your face, then "he doesn't know anything about policing, not his job"

3

CommonSense 10 years, 3 months ago

Ultimately it is our judiciary system that is failing us most. If you look at the history of the perpetrators of these crimes you'll see that they are quite known to the police and have already had at least one stint in jail. None of these persons are first time offenders. The police catch them and the courts let them out. Why is that? This government needs to completely revamp our antiquated laws on crime. Why is it that a person can be sentenced to 4 years for a joint but a murderer is out on bail with an ankle bracelet because of "overcrowding"? I would rather be walking the streets with a weed smoker than a murderer. The difference between this government and the last is that it seems as though these MPs are completely oblivious to what's going on here. Where the hell is Bernard Nottage? Sleeping as usual? These men do not seem to care. How are these high powered weapons entering the country? I agree that the police force needs to take on the attitudes of the LAPD and NYPD. Random stops and frisks. Start patrolling the streets. You don't see police officers walking unless they're on Bay Street. Nassau is a dangerous place. Won't see me out after dark I'm putting myself on a curfew.

4

Honestman 10 years, 3 months ago

Why put a physician in charge of National Security? What on earth does Dr. Nottage know about dealing with hardened criminals?

5

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 3 months ago

Nothing. Funny enough by grasping at this appointment, he's destroyed the chance of being PM that he so desperately wants.

1

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 3 months ago

Yeah, I know. Didn't say he was "PM quality" but it's clearly his desire. In absence of his current appointment his readiness could have been an open question, some may have said "give him a chance". The question has been clearly answered for me, BJN is not a leader, anytime stuff hits the fan his first comment is, blame the people under me, I didn't have anything to do with it. FM is a dictator, why ask the people their opinion. BD (what an oxymoron) he's an opportunist, no courage whatsoever, don't ruffle any feathers, just watch everyone else fall like flies and be the last one standing. What a lousy team this PM has chosen...

1

Honestman 10 years, 3 months ago

I suspect the cabinet was chosen for the PM.

1

Greentea 10 years, 3 months ago

The problem is that Cabinet Ministers are drawn from elected officials not the best in the country in a particular area. Who else would you recommend the PM post to this position given his severely limited pool? And don't say Leslie Miller because there is no money to be made in policing and no debt to be forgiven there- so in spite of what he says- he would never accept it.

0

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 3 months ago

A few years ago he made a very good choice in James Smith as Minister of State in Finance. Yes I know he would ultimately answer to an elected official, but a state appt is an option to hire competent people

A friend suggested to me yesterday that a post like national security should always have a professional appointment. Maybe that was the idea behind Bell but he's proven to be such a powder keg. I can't believe that they didn't realize his propensity to self implode before they appointed him, they must know his personality. I like the idea of a true professional in the post, the only problem short term is the utter foolishness and incompetence they'd have to put up with from the other ministers, could be very frustrating for a competent person who could get a private sector job at the drop of a hat.

No, I would not suggest Leslie Miller he doesn't know anything more about policing than the average citizen. Hang them all, arm everyone etc, we need someone with sound theoretical knowledge and many years of testing different theories (successfully) in hot environments. The problem is so bad right now I'd even go for a foreign appointment

The young people are angry. Some of them are holding grudges against persons and the persons don't even know it. Some are jealous of people who have homes, a car or even jewelry and so they plot on them. Plot to take their life even. Many small business people are in fear of their lives and so they are losing down. Some families have lost more than a dozen close relatives to murder. So many it is the time to get out of the city. Pack up and leave Nassau. Either the government and the police do not have the solution to the crime problem or they do not have the guts to implement the strategy. The number of victims for each drive by is increasing. the criminals are becoming more fearless. They fear neither God nor man. They seem to be fascinated with murder and taking life,

Genesis 9:6 - Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.

Exodus 21:12 - He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.

Exodus 20:13 - Thou shalt not kill.

Romans 13:1-14 - Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Numbers 35:33 - So ye shall not pollute the land wherein ye [are]: for blood it defileth the land: and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood that is shed therein, but by the blood of him that shed it.

Leviticus 24:17 - And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death.

Genesis 9:5-6 - And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man's brother will I require the life of man.

THE BAHAMAS tolerates taking of innocent life, and theft of property and calls it our " legal" system

THE BAHAMAS tolerates gambling and many turn to numbers for economic salvation.

THE BAHAMAS tolerates everything except God.

With your way of thinking it's no surprise that people don't believe. Who wants to believe in a God that is vengeful? Isn't that what these criminals are doing now? TAKING REVENGE. These killings have nothing to do with god these are due to a lack of fear of prison, a lack of conscience and a general disregard for higher authority.

Let's not have any more calls for anti-crime rallies. Let's steer our rallies to anti-corruption and pro-education. These guys have very bad moral and ethical examples of how to make it, from the top man straight down the line. How can a politician retain any modicum of respect after being discovered with a bag of unexplained money in his closet? His closet! Or be discovered naked in the parking lot of a church with his sweetheart? Or beat his "sweetheart" senseless for cheating on him? Or go from insurance policy or mortgaged home as only "asset" to millionaire in 5yrs, on a minister's salary, while paying school fees! How is that possible? How could someone have been riddled by the Commission Of Inquiry and later be given title "Sir" or "Hero" or have his name adorn the nation airport? In what kind of alien Godless land does that happen?

2

Honestman 10 years, 3 months ago

0

John 10 years, 3 months ago

So what are YOU relying on to save you? Where will you hide when this earth is on fire?

0

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 3 months ago

@John, I don't have to walk around quoting scriptures for everyone to know what a great Christian I am.

As far as I know, God never said "if everybody seeks my face", he said "if MY people humble themselves and seek my face ...then will I ...heal their land". You are trying unrealistically to force on everyone what God is asking the select few to do.

God also admonishes us to be IN the world. To me that means that I approach problems realistically. I don't pray for fire to come down and hit the car driven by the drive by shooters, that would certainly be nice, but it's not going to happen.

My feet are on the ground, I'm looking for an on-the-ground-solution with possibly some divine inspiration. Increasing the prison population will not work, you have to stop the machine that's feeding the prison. Getting rid of corrupt officials and attacking hopelessness through education seems like a good start to me.

Forty years of rule by failed lawyers whose only moral compass is greed equals a corrupt, unethical, uneducated nation that has no future. The old boy network of the political class is to blame for our current problems, they created this monster for votes. Keep them dependent, ignorant, with no hope for the future and then present yourself as a savoir with a ham or turkey and you can continue being a blood sucking M.P. Now the chickens are coming home to roost after Forty years of misrule.

We can talk all we want,What we need to do is take action.WE speak about the Good old boy network of the political class. What concern me is that we the public and the police know that this corruption is happening but we take NO action, to hold these people accountable. What we need is some high profile arrest for taking bribe's while doing the people's business have them explain how they came about this wealth, and work our way down the line.If you keed ding what you have been doing, you will keep getting what you have been getting. Don’t underestimate yourself. You are capable of more than you can ever imagine. When life presses in on you the hardest, that’s when your breakthrough is near. Press on. Don’t stop to think about the work you have to do; just put yourself on auto-pilot.

Hold yourself to a higher standard daily. Your family, friends and co-workers all look to you for their cues. Be mindful to lift the vibration in every room you enter. Treat yourself to a higher belief system. Trust and let go. Greatness is in your DNA. God don’t make junk. Each day you have a new chance to develop new ideas, reach for new goals and conquer new mountains. Chase down your dream like it’s the last bus of the night. Go get it! You have something special. You have Greatness within you!

Each day you have a new chance to develop new ideas, reach for new goals and conquer new mountains.

That is the problem in the Bahamas. These young gun toters do not have the chance to develop new ideas or reach new goals, or conquer new mountains. The system is stacked against them.

Our society and economy is built on servitude to the rich. The only jobs are those catering to those who can afford amenities that we cannot. What does that do to a young man's pride when the only available means of generating money is to act as a servant to tourists? And when the tourists stop coming due to economic circumstances, there are no jobs.

The unemployment grows. Crime grows. The country is sick. It has been raped and pillaged by our own for the past forty years. You shall reap what you sow, and we are reaping it now in spades.

It will get worse before it gets better. Eventually the people will tire of the anarchy and the socioeconomic imprisonment and will rise up. But not before there will be carnage, blood and tears in every corner, and Lyford Cay and Old Fort Bay will become either Fort Apache The Bronx, or what Detroit is today.

It takes at least a mile to turn a tanker at sea, and it will take as many generations to fix the Bahamas as it took to bring it to wrack and ruin. I am just thankful that I have been prudent enough with my education, life resources, money and career to eventually escape it when the conditions become too unbearable.

Either we can try to fix our country ourselves, but there is no political will to do so. Or we can pull the nuclear option -- rescind our independence and let the British get us back on track like they are doing in the Turks and Caicos. The Brits have a track record of running things. Just look at the Cayman Islands.

We are too stupid to see past our noses, and we are unable to save ourselves.

The fear of God is dismal among these young folks, so therefore accountability has to play a role. Too many criminals are out on bail, too many corruption in law enforcement and the judicial system and as long as we continue to allow individuals to be comfortable committing these senseless acts then this type of behavior will continue. I have to ask the question what if these victims were tourist, what action would the gov't take? I guess when its not directly affecting their industries then they don't care.

**A BAHAMIAN LIVING IN THE U.S.A WANTING TO COME HOME****

A GENIUS Once Said Never Talk when You're Emotional. So, Can I be Crazy This One Time? Come On It's The End Of 2013?! Ok, Thank you! IMHO: It's Called Economic Sabotage, The Bahamas Welcomed China Into Somebody's Backyard. Religion? are you kidding? We (Bahamas) are still spending millions of U.S.A money to "fight" "The WAR on war on drugs", when (Cannabis, Weed, Dope, Trees) is IS LEGAL in MANY states in the U.S.A! not only for medical use (Which it DOES help sick people, but try "selling" that to dem good ole liquor drinking church folk!) but also RECREATIONALLY! LIQUOR IS BIG/GOOD BUSINESS BUT DOPE IS OF THE DEVIL! (if you ever want us to STAY AWAY from something, just say the bible say, whether true or false, not to do it) Do you think these drug dealers are blind to the hypocrisy? Does the name Dr. Frazier and Rev. Dr McPhee etc "ring your bell" (pun intended) Education is the key! Example? Cayman Islands and others. Nygard and the others are having a field day! 20 years ago, who were the top Surnames in politics? TODAY, who are the top Surnames in politics? Same names different generation, am not hatin' it's just business, and I get it totally. Incest, Abuse, Hypocrisy, Babies having MULTIPLE babies and having to "support" them on a basic education. I agree it's not 1 political party issue, it ALL political party issue, it's very difficult to "control" and Educated Majority, Example? U.S.A, It's VERY easy to politically or spiritually "control" the uneducated and depressed, solution number one? just PRAY about it! Are you kidding me??? But 50% of it also include some of our people taking personal responsibility for their actions and stop passing the blame. GUNS EQUALS MONEY & POWER! it's ALWAYS been that way like it or not! Have ANYONE point a loaded gun in your face and they WILL get your attention, respect or whatever they want! (family, friend or foe) We are no longer in the days when Christopher Columbus secret choice weapon of economic sabotage was disease to wipe out the Arawaks and "founded" The Bahamas in 1492, Today it's secretive Government/Corporation sponsored Economic Assassins. We are living in an information age where ANYTHING you want to learn no matter what/where you are in the world, a "How to" can be found on the internet. On youtube you can watch SHOTTAS or Creating Sustainable Living from coconut bark, its up to you!, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. Someone once said if you want to hide money in your house from _ _ _ s Just put it in a book.. But no matter the challenges, I am who I am and will ALWAYS be a proud BAHAMIAN. OH, SORRY, I KNOW I JUST JACKED YOUR POST. But this crime issue is EXASPERATING!Capitol Punishment? sure thats a start, but good luck "selling" that to the Privy Council who are all formally _ and the Tribune highlight the situation like its Tourism! This post will be deleted in 3- 2- 1

One community at a time--money is the great incentive. Approach it on multiple levels: List the names and print photos and address of ALL suspected gang members/drug dealers/street soldiers warning the public of their whereabouts, recent activities, their associates and place most commonly found. Update this list weekly. Scratch the Urban Renewal Sites and make them Headquarters for Leaders in the Community giving them powers to that of a Local Constable with deputies assigned to that office from the community. Arm this person and the deputies and give them powers and authorities to keep the peace within the confines of The Law. Powers that include, shutting down liquor stores that are opened illegally, stopping block parties after hours, patrolling the designated areas, all of these things the RBPF are SUPPOSED to be doing but are not. Donate $1 a day to the community that reports the longest period without crime i.e. letting people police themselves. incentivize the community members to spy on their neighbors. Identify all illegal drugs "hot spots" and persons frequenting the area and target the area with continuous patrolling. There are a few more things I would suggest but if we could start with the above which really does not cost a DIME of Public Funds, we could make a difference

1

ThisIsOurs 10 years, 3 months ago

It would be nice for a change people were given incentives to be ethical rather than sell a vote or turn a blind eye to drug dealing or gambling operations. It was *extremely troubling to see the article with webshop owners on the back of a truck handing out turkey "bribes". Do Bahamians have a greater propensity than other nationalities for allowing themselves to be bought? It's so pervasive...

1

Rontom 10 years, 3 months ago

The short answer is No we are not. But I believe you know this as well. It is pervasive because in this town, accountability is a rare breed. But to stay on topic, giving Power to the people is the answer. There is a reason for local sheriffs in other territories and developed countries: decentralizing federal government and creating provincial government. The results, communities determining their own safety and security. I can see why this is a bad idea for the all too important RBPF that always feel threatened and prescient on everything big and small. I even get why this would scare the bejesus out of the MP because his beak is not being dipped in every saucer anymore (to use a Godfather reference) and the community are closer to affecting change in real time with real consequences than what we have now and that makes him/her rather redundant.

Emac 10 years, 3 months ago

My fellow Bahamians, why do we always take drastic measures when things get out of hand. We must realize that this is not an overnight problem. Therefore, one cannot expect to solve this crime problem overnight. When things spur out of control some people want to suddenly turn to Christianity-Others want to see the police force searching everyone randomly, while others cast the blame on the politicians: The same ones they keep voting in over and over again. We can compare the attitude of the majority of Bahamians to that of an obese person, who keeps eating unhealthy food, even though this person knows it can kill him or her. The doctor keeps telling this person to cut back on unhealthy eating habits but this person insists on being a glutton, until one day the person succumbs to their unhealthy lifestyle. We have seen the writing on the wall for some time now, but we continue to ignore it. The solution is quite simple: Simply ENFORCE the law that already exists. Little things like running red lights, not yielding to stop signs, littering or indecent public behavior should NEVER be allowed. It is only natural for people to feel that they can get by with anything once they slip pass little things. Be consistent with enforcing the law. MAN up and get rid of the bad apples. Yep, it is that simple. We need to stop being reactive and be proactive. And for all those domatic christians out there, as Rory mentioned, there is a church on every corner. Obviously that is not the answer. Maybe we need to get jolted back into reality so that we can stop all the hypocrisy and pretending. When we go about our daily lives pretending that the entire world is bright and cheery, and that the problems that exist has nothing to do with us, then will we be only fooling ourselves.

IT REALLY IS SIMPLE . Number one ,,Men making four and five babies w/ three to four different women and not being involved .Number 2 we discipline with verbal and physical abuse that is really teaching conflict resolution through violence .There are too many long term studies to list that show whipping the sh#t out of kids just produces violent adults ..I have giving up ,violent crime and poverty will increase and theres nothing PLP ,FNM OR DNA can do.With in the next 20 yrs we will become Jamaica and Haiti ,,Jamaicas homocide rate is 40 per 100,000 ours is now 30 per 100,000 ,,we are on are way ..All the god nonsense is ridiculous ,countries like Denmark etc that don,t shove religion down everyones throat have the lowest homocides rates in the world We got independence but we are not a responsible ,moral people ,and now we are paying the price ,,NO CHINA ,NO U/S IS KILLING US ,ITS US MAKING BABIES LIKE TOPSY AND KILLING ONE ANOTHER ..

What we seem to overlook is the problem exists in New Providence, where we have allowed every dirty bird to fly in and live amongst us. CRIME, especially murder is non-existent in most of the family islands, where the family structure is still intact, morality to a good degree still exists, and persons still respect each other and each other's property. In New Providence, you cannot be your brother's keeper because many do not know who their brothers are in many instances. This island has some 20 radio stations, most of them spewing garbage 24 hours a day. We have a major fast food chain promoting angry food. Have you had your angry whopper yet? What is the subliminal message behind this promotion? That it is ok to be angry? Or even yet something must be wrong with you if youare not angry. We tend to forget man is not just a physical being, but he is also spiritual. And so clean persons cannot live with dirty spirits. So when we allow the mind to be contaminated with filth then it comes out in our physical behavior. If we have some 20 radio stations brainwashing us all day, telling us it is ok to kill someone if you have a 'vibe' with them. or it is ok to sleep with your boy's girl or to rob the store on the corner to put some bling on your hand, or bragging about how many guns you own or how many 'niggas' you done killed or to drive by and shoot everything standing in a drive-by then this becomes the norm. Then do research and find out who owns and operates these stations. Who owns the radio stations that are the worst offenders. You don't need God to tell you that, or do you? So lets continue to deny the existence of God or even our spiritual self.

@John, the "Angry Whopper" is a spicy burger. The "anger" refers to nothing but a little hot pepper. There is no subliminal message to commit criminal acts behind a fast food sandwich. I hope this information is helpful.

Hmmm interesting, I thought they were playing off of "a hungry man is an angry man", but your explanation is better, not so nice where the hungry man jingle ends up:)
