Christian Council wants clarity on gaming policy

BAHAMAS Christian Council President Rev Dr Ranford Patterson yesterday called on Prime Minister Perry Christie to clarify if recent statements made by Obie Wilchcombe on gaming is official government policy or Mr Wilchcombe’s personal opinion.

Last week, the gaming minister said web shop gaming is “not off the table” and is still up for discussion –
despite Bahamians overwhelmingly voting against the regularisation and taxation of web shops.

In fact, he said he has already met with several church leaders who have agreed to help him in his dialogue with other influential religious leaders.

In a press statement, Dr Patterson said the BCC’s postion on web shop gaming has not changed and it is disrepectful for the government to attempt to overturn the results of the referendum.

“We feel that it is a blatant disregard to the thousands of voters who cast ballots in the referendum and an affront to the majority of Bahamians that despite a resounding defeat at the polls nearly one year ago, numbers racketeering not only continues to blatantly defy the will of the people, but some have also been awarded new licenses by the Government,” he said.
“For a Minister of the Government to say that the laws governing numbers racketeering cannot be enforced, strongly suggests that the Minister is either intentionally being intellectually dishonest or lacks the political will particularly since the Government is armed with the will of the people who soundly expressed their desire to enforce the laws of the land. The BCC seeks to ascertain from Prime Minister the Rt.Hon. Perry Christie whether Minister Wilchcombe is speaking and acting independently of his Government’s stated position or is he speaking on behalf of the Government when he proposed that he is seeking a way to legalize numbers racketeering and by extension suggest that the church compromise.”

Dr Patterson also questioned why, a year after the referendum, are web shops still allowed to operate.

He said: “As we approach the eve of the 1st anniversary of the referendum, we humbly ask Prime Minister Christie to clearly articulate the Government’s position and intention regarding the shutting down of the numbers racket presently being operated illegally in web shops by way of internet gaming.
“We would also like to know, is the Government of The Bahamas seeking to overturn the results of the referendum, ignoring the peaceful exercise in democracy that many of the voters demonstrated? Is the Government of The Bahamas now seeking a way to not keep its word after it faithfully promised the nation that it would? Church leaders as well as its membership in addition to countless Bahamians are also trying to determine why is the Government not providing the leadership and displaying the tenacity to uphold the law and the expressed will of the Bahamian people? One would think that every Government would rally to do whatever it takes to champion the voice of the people. The BCC finds the non-performance of the Government in this matter to be extremely disappointing.”

Dr Patterson said the Government of the Bahamas cannot undo the democratic exercise conducted nearly a year ago, nor can the BCC or the Government change the results of the 48,012 registered voters who said “No” to legalizing, regulating and taxing the illegal numbers racket in The Bahamas and the BCC has no desire to do so.

SMFT why is the Christian Council still attempting to call the shots on anything?! These people have an issue with every single thing that doesn't concern them. These are personal choices that people make in regards to their own lives. You want to gamble? Fine! Let the government make money off of you when you lose. You want to watch BET? Fine! But nooo the Christian Council has nothing better to do than to dictate what Bahamians should and should not be allowed to do in the privacy of their own homes.

Why is this even still in existence?

The BCC has always left a bad taste in my mouth regarding issues that they interfere with where they have no rights doing so. However, this time, the council's president does raise some valid points. What the heck was the purpose of the referendum? I was one of the people who voted yes and yes, but the masses said no. So the big question is, why is this still an issue? The only thing that is apparent here is that the people really ain’t gat no say. And when a nation's voice means nothing to a government then it is time to take to the streets. Just sayin.

Christian Council President Rev Dr Ranford Patterson says he wants to know the "status" of the gaming situation based on what Obie said ?

Why doesn't Dr. Patterson find out the status HIMSELF by visiting his NEAREST gaming webshop - walk up to the door - and pull on it to determine whether or not is is open or whether the security officer will open it for him and welcome him in ?????????????? He can do that NOW, and not have to wait on the PM to respond.

In addition, he seems dismayed that a year has passed since referendum without action. WHAT ACTION HAS HE TAKEN?????????

WHY hasn't he called on all his member churches (and other that would get involved) to GET OUT ON THE STREETS and show their faces??? Why don't they pick ONE game shop every Sunday (or Saturday) after church and ALL 50 churches (or so) show up in person outside of that ONE shop and form a human chain around it preventing people from coming and going (whithout havinge to wade through the crowd) - even criss-crossing the street in front delaying traffic and generally causing a scene ????

Why not?

Again I say DO SOMETHING - stop talking and making manifestos and campaign promises.

i think their time would be better spent addressing young men growing up without fathers.

Is gaming really the top priority they see themselves needing to dedicate their time and money to addressing? If so then maybe the Christian Council should seek some Council themselves to get their priorities straight ...

Or maybe they just like to take on the easy problems.

Your absolutely right. There are better problems that needs addressing however from the bible days the B.C.C. need to remember - during the feeding of the 5000, do you think it was only that amount living. Or while Noah was building the Ark, think he put his task at hand aside to gather 'lost sheep'. The B.C.C. has the right to voice their opinion, however its up to the people to take heed or give a deaf ear. Everyone is turning to the Government, why not the B.C.C. lend a helping hand with their multi-churches and thousands of members by each church launching a program to mold young individuals into respectable and decent young adults. From the participants of such exercise, persons could be given handyman jobs, lawn care, window washers, car cleaners, baby/elderly sitters and the list goes on to members of the church whom seeks workers in various areas but didn't know whom individual to trust. During that referendum exercise the NO vote may have won, but how much No voters was back in the web shops the following day. Or do you think only those who spend money in the web shops are those whom voted yes. B.C.C. help your members first, then reach out to society because doing it the other way around, you're not even sure who in your church agree with your choices.

The head of the BCC have to be intellectual retarded to keep talking fool about Web shop when there is very serious situation among them. It is my understanding that his PHEOPHILE PREACHER that was released from prison recently has started a new church. This is what he should deal with to save the children that would enter into this church. THIS CHURCH SHOULD BE CLOSED.
