KEVA Major, wife of convicted drug trafficker Dwight Major, was arrested with 13 other persons on Tuesday and held by police for several hours following an alleged scuffle at the Nassau Street court complex.

According to head of the Central Detective Unit Superintendent Paul Rolle, an argument occurred at the complex on Tuesday morning as Mrs Major was being searched by police officers at the court’s security check point.

He said that several members of a group arrived at the court wearing shirts in memory of murdered 17-year-old Enrico Major, Ms Major’s son.

The group was at the court to attend a hearing for the people charged with the death of the boy.

Major was killed after he was attacked by a group of men on June 1 while he walked on Baillou Hill Road South with a friend. The slain teen’s funeral was held last weekend.

Following Tuesday’s incident, police ordered that Mrs Major, with two of her sons and others, be held in a cell at the complex.

Yesterday, Mrs Major’s lawyer Keod Smith said it was unfortunate that police refused to treat his client and her family as victims and mourners of a tragic death.

Mr Smith claimed that an argument broke out when his client was asked to go through the metal detector several times.

He told The Tribune that he was instructed by Mrs Major to prepare civil and criminal action over the way the entire group was treated during the ordeal.

He said many of the people being accused by the police were not in close proximity of the incident when it happened. However, he said, they were being penalised for simply being associated with the Majors.

“It is unfortunate,” he said, “that matters came to this, especially when you know that an innocent child was brutally murdered and his parents, friends and family determined to come to court to see these persons responsible for his death stand before the courts. 

“I wish the police would treat them as victims and people going through a grieving process. It is disturbing to say the least that the police decided to take the stance that they have.”

Mrs Major was released around 1:30 am yesterday, while several of the young men in the group are still being held at various police stations, The Tribune understands.

Attempts were made to contact Mrs Major, but they were not successful up to press time.
