A MAN, who was reportedly driving on the wrong side of the street, was killed yesterday after his car smashed into a Mack truck on Zion Boulevard and East Street South.
The accident happened shortly after noon.
The victim’s car was badly damaged from the crash, which police said is an indicator that he was speeding. The driver and passenger in the Mack truck were not hurt in the incident.
“Our investigation has revealed that the driver of that vehicle would have been travelling west in the eastbound lane, that means he was driving against the flow of traffic and he made attempts to beat, to pass the truck that had the right of way to travel east on the boulevard,” head of the traffic division, Superintendant Craig Stubbs told reporters. “As a result, the collision occurred.”
The victim, who was driving a 2004 Nissan vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Supt Stubbs urged motorists to exercise patience when driving.
“We find the majority of our accidents on the streets of New Providence today are a result of drivers not being patient. Drivers fail to adhere to the traffic rules and regulations. They fail to stop at stop signs, they run traffic lights, they seem to drive in the wrong direction on a one-way street. All that are contributing factors to what we see in the number of accidents, serious accidents on the streets of New Providence.”
Yesterday’s death marked the country’s sixth traffic fatality of the year.

I wonder if he was travelling on East Street side,because if so there is a median that separates the lanes of traffic going toward South Beach. If this is where I think it is by the police station he made a grave and deadly error. Anyone who normally travels that junction knows that there is no overtaking no matter which way you are travelling. Even if you are coming Bamboo Blvd or Zion Blvd the traffic is always tight coming onto East Street.
RIP to the man and I hope this is a lesson to other Bahamians to adhere to the road rules and be very vigliant while driving.
