I was extremely bothered by a press release sent by my COBUS President about pending fee increases at The College of The Bahamas.
While in all honesty the fees are affordable and the pay increase is probably necessary but I cannot see them asking for more money and providing less service.
There was an instance last year where it was claimed that the Business office “misplaced” over $12,000 and this has yet to be rectified.
I am a biochemistry student and this semester was my the worse yet at COB with all of my major classes being offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday back to back because there was some type of scheduling issues.
As students, we spoke up about this and yet there has been no change. The classes for us to register have not been placed on self serve as yet. Even lecturers understand and admit that there are so many colossal screw ups with the administration of the college.
In my programme, one of the largest the college has, there are only three lower level courses being offered this summer. When I asked my advisor why is this the case, I was sent to the Dean who stated that students will need to sacrifice this summer because he isn’t going to be allowing lecturers to be making any overtime. So I should suffer because of his issues.
How can you be asking for more money again, we got a parking fee (hardly any parking); Technology fee (never enough working computers or printers); Campus development fee (nothing has changed).
Really if this is the mentality of our administration there is no way this college will ever become anything close to university.

Was just a "college" in words only Disillusioned Student.....there are better Middle schools and High Schools in other countries that you would benefit better from attending....."COB University?"...haha...what a joke!

And these are the words of an active COB student ................. can you imagine the sentiments and horror stories of the thousands of COB alumni???????? That is one of the reasons why COB cannot progress ............. too many bad memories of the alumni (the real financial boosters of a growing university)

Bahamians are quick to criticize their own. I went to COB and also to a University with over 30 thousand students. The overall educational experience was comparable.

I agree Deddie. That was also my experience when I transferred from COB. Despite its flaws COB is a reputable college, and most important its credits are transferrable to major US colleges. If they were not, then that would a real problem. The infrastructure and administrative issues are fixable, and should not stop its progression toward University status.
However, the college should look for alternative sources of revenue to improve in these areas. VAT charged on tuition, not tuition increases, should be used to help the college to help achieve this goal.

Deddie, COB is a quality college ............. but its a stretch to call it a comparable University ..................... thats my point

As an educational institution, COB compares fairly well with similarly sized institutions.

Disillusioned Student never say never. I am happy that former Students have come to the defence of the college. The fees at the college are very low compared to other colleges. As you are aware the Teachers are always asking for increases in their salaries. Where is the money to come from ?
