I watch quite a bit of US TV – especially CNN, which I think of all the US stations gives the best, objective news coverage. I recall the first news of what is now known as COVID-19 being announced as having escaped from a marketplace in Wuhan, to a nearby medical clinic in China.

As the story developed, I recall a segment showing a young man — from the way he was dressed, I gathered he was a medical researcher who worked in the Wuhan clinic. He appeared to be almost panic stricken with his discovery. He said that in his research he had discovered a strange virus — he feared that if it escaped it could cause great damage. He wanted the world to be alerted. They tried to silence him. Shortly afterward, they announced his death, presumably from the very virus that he feared would shake the world if not contained.

I wonder why in all of these reports someone doesn’t recall this episode. It might not be the beginning of the story, but surely, it bears some investigation and would be interesting to be repeated on screen by the broadcast media.

CNN is so good at its research, and I know it must have these clips on file, because it was on CNN that I first saw them in the early days of this pandemic, before it was even called a pandemic. This scene of panic was repeated several times, and then dropped. I think it would be interesting to see this. episode again. After all it might throw light on something that was going on in that lab at the time, which could be the key to a partial solution.
