BAHAMIAN icon, Olympian, and philanthropist Sir Durward Randolph Knowles was remembered yesterday as a man who loved his country and strove to make his community a better place.

SPORTING icon Sir Durward ‘Sea Wolf’ Knowles, in his obituary, as he was laid to rest following his funeral service at the Ebenezer Methodist Church, penned the following words: “I can honestly say, I have lived a full life and I left the world a better place than I found it.”
Remembering Sir Durward, a national hero
THE Bahamas lost a great citizen on Saturday when Sir Durward Knowles passed away at age 100. So much has been written about the man known affectionately as “Sea Wolf” in the days since and in the year of celebrations leading up to his 100th birthday that you might think it would be hard to add anything more. Yet such was the mark of the man that the more you know, the more there is to know; the deeper you dig, the greater his spirit shines; the more records you realize he holds, the better you understand that Sir Durward was far more than a sports hero. He was a national icon, the father figure for a nation eager to find a symbol of all that is good.
The man who sailed to gold
FROM the beginning to the end of his life, Sir Durward Randolph Knowles lived his philosophy, “fish or cut bait – either you will choose to be a part or be one way or another, whichever one it is, a decision has to be made.”
