GOVERNOR General Sir Cornelius A Smith was airlifted from Eleuthera to New Providence on Thursday after suffering from what is believed to be heat exhaustion as he attended an official event on the island, Press Secretary Clint Watson said.

Sir Cornelius was taken to Doctors Hospital where, at last report, he was under observation by medical personnel.

However, Mr Watson said he was expected to be fine.

"From all indications and initial assessments it appeared the Governor General may have experienced heat exhaustion," Mr Watson said in an update on Thursday afternoon, noting that it is also Sir Cornelius’ 85th birthday.

"According to the Secretary to the Governor General Jack Thompson they were in Eleuthera on official business. They enjoyed a 'great' ceremony at PA Gibson Primary School, North Eleuthera and proceeded to take photos outside after that event.

"His Excellency complained of not feeling well. He was taken to the local clinic and seen by a doctor, who advised that he seek further medical attention.

"His Excellency was airlifted to Nassau and taken by ambulance to Doctors Hospital. During the entire ordeal he was awake and aware."

Sadly, most elderly Bahamians living in Eleuthera wouldn't be air lifted anywhere if they fell similarly ill, especially if they don't have adequate medical insurance coverage.

I am deeply troubled by this event. Why do we take the lives of government officials lightly. Why did the aircraft that bought him there had to leave? Why is it in 2022 are we still dealing with officials like we did in the 1960s or 1970s. If there was a proper system in place there would not have been a wait time for him to b flown out. Is the same thing done for the PM an DPM?

I guess you don't remember that poor 'big' fella in Bimini who government just let die from COVID because they couldn't fit him in their zipped-locked oxygenated quarantine bag in order to be air-lifted to a hospital in Nassau on an emergency basis.

Why not PMH? Our government officials don't trust the systems the government is responsible for.

Good enough for the peasants but not for those in public positions of power.

Same with Davis he was on the first private plane to the USA when he got COVID.

CA upon the FNM victory as brief Minister of Education was a godsend to the aspirations of Bahamian writers only to be replaced by the aloofness, hauty uncouth exceptionally elitist, $hit don't stink Dame Ivy. Such was the pain, of her dismissiveness, destain of Bahamian writers being invited to be a part of creating books based on the evidence of data extrapolated from the Ingraham authorized Bahamian Youth Report still of utmost relevance today. It was an indictment on the family structure morality, spread of AIDS, and power wielder within the Bahamian home. Bahamians garnered a golden gleam of street drug money culture and parental compliance, the infidelity of females that then spread AIDS, youth violent gun culture violence and Police confrontation. Much has been written and all ignored iducationally, except our youth cannot have a say and be listened to,rather they are spoken at. When local writers as myself address what stressers affect our young people who make headlines to make decisions based on the way they see our world as I did in my short story, The Threat, I was advised by Education officials that students fill find it appalling to speak of violence and smoking before going to classes. What a difference a day makes that Police are speaking to students. Sir CA Smith believed in Bahamian literature and Bahamian Writers playing our part, but that Ivy upon appointment sat with The Bahamian Writers Club, we could not speak, ask a question, then we had to sit as she made her non Royal exist. We saw The Dutchess of Cambridge speak then listen to children, someone should have taught our Dame some manners and broughtupsee.

Please don't denigrate Dame Ivy. She did more education reform than any MOE since 1967

I am solely referring to her treatment of Bahamian writers. USA ambassador Sydney Williams hosted us to lunch for hours is various discussion. She hosted us for for 45seconds most and we could ask no questions. The Bahamas Writers Association really felt let down after promising uplifting and encouragement from Sir CA.
