US warns citizens to use "extreme caution" in eastern New Providence

The US Embassy in Nassau released a security alert this morning warning citizens about the murder rate and to exercise extreme caution in the eastern part of New Providence.

In the alert, the embassy warned that there have been 18 murders in the capital since the beginning of 2024 with retaliatory gang violence as the primary motive.

The alert read: “The U.S. Embassy in Nassau advises U.S. citizens to be aware that 18 murders have occurred in Nassau since the beginning of 2024.

“Murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets.  Retaliatory gang violence has been the primary motive in 2024 murders.”

The alert further advised citizens to take the following actions: exercise extreme caution in the eastern part of New Providence Island (Nassau);  use caution when walking or driving at night; keep a low profile; be aware of your surroundings; do not physically resist any robbery attempt; and review your personal security plans.

Yes, now it's starting, and once this narrative continues we will soon be eating grass. Stop over guest will disappear, and we will be up s$$t creek.

"18 murders in the capital since the beginning of 2024" is a joke for where these people come from; their news normally reads "18 murders at one school since the beginning of 2024"

Some of the largest cities in the US that one might associate with high murder rates can’t compete with that of the Bahamas which last year was at 32 murders per 100,000k population. NYC was 5.5/100,000k Miami was 8/100,000k Jacksonville 13.3/100,000k Rochester 30/100,000k Atlanta 33/100,000k Detroit 50/100,000 The murder rate overall in the US has come down considerably since 2020. It’s difficult with so many guns in the US, but that’s not supposed be happening here. So one has to ask what would be the stats here if we wiped out the corruption w/police, customs inspectors, etc. and applied the law to those who profit from the importation/firearms sales?

Tribune January 17th "The Bahamas is not presently in danger of suffering a US travel advisory over the recent murder spike, a senior hotelier asserted yesterday, adding that it was not yet "a major concern for tourism." Robert Sands

My response: "Im waiting for the announcement anytime now. Theyve circulated advisories for far less activity"

Remember during the pandemic when Minnis gave that ill advised notice that COVID was in east NP? I feel the same way about this. Theres no wall between Eastern and Western NP.

You mean Perry Christies magic map? I remember when he told us he had the solution for crime, he'd just come police headquarters and they had a map that showed where all the hotspots were. The problem with that approach is it ignores the crime bosses. The US catches them from Ninety to Sam to Nygard. As long as the kingpins and white collar criminals remain untouched crime will never go away.

For comparisons sake, according to 2023 United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, statistics, per 100,000 people Jamaica tops the list at 53. The Bahamas is 9th with 31, the United States is 55th with 6.4, and even Mexico which suffers from extreme violent crime has a lower rate than ours coming in 15th with 26.

Somehow we have got to do better. Not for our visitors because, quite frankly, they don't care but for our people.
