THE country recorded its first traffic fatality when a 62-year-old woman was hit by a car on Friday.

It happened around 5:30pm.

Police say the woman, who sources identified as Virgina Williams, was struck by a 1997 Mercury Sable travelling east on Prince Charles Drive in the area of Pine Barron Road.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance, but died of her injuries a short time later.

Police say the 49-year-old male driver is assisting officers from the Traffic Division with their investigations into this matter.

There were 44 traffic deaths in 2011 and 2012.

Also on Friday, a team of officers from the Traffic Division launched an “aggressive campaign” against speed violators on East Bay Street and West Bay Street – specifically in the areas of Montagu Beach and Goodman’s Bay.

As a result 140 persons were ticketed for speeding, 20 persons were ticketed for driving without a seatbelt, 10 persons for non transparent windows, 10 persons for driving an unlicensed vehicle, five persons for not having their disc in sight and three motorcyclists for not wearing a helmet.

Officers from the Traffic Department are also reminding the motoring public to adhere to the rules governing the usage of the roadways and are encouraging drivers and passengers to buckle up as this save lives.

Further, pedestrians are being urged to look carefully before trying to cross the street.
