Alleged drowning on diving expedition

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an alleged drowning incident that occurred in Western New Providence on Friday afternoon.

According to reports, shortly before 3pm, an elderly man was on a diving expedition when he lost consciousness in the water. He was rescued, taken to a nearby dive facility and transported to hospital by paramedics where he was pronounced dead.

Foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

this is my step dad he is in his 60s and in good health this is so tragic please pray for his wife and our family. this was un expected and awful. the family is in the Bahamas now trying to get the body home. we are devastated. I am sorry to all the families on the excursion. God bless all.

I’m so sorry to hear about you stepdad. I was with the family that was on the boat with you all and we have all been praying for your family. My son and his friend were the ones that took the boat back to the dive shop with you all. They both said someone in your group was very nice and helped them feel a little more comfortable in such a chaotic time. Thank you very much and we will continue to pray for your family.

Right! I don't think there's a dive operation in the world who has not had people die while under their watch. There are a countless number of reasons why people die on dives or snorkeling, and it not always equipment failure or carelessness. It's an activity and people can die while being active and while sitting peacefully in a chair or sleeping in bed.

No matter what though there are always people who miss them when they pass. My condolences to the family.

First off - my condolences to the family. This post is in NO WAY intended to be aimed at you or your late family member!!

I am a Master Scuba Diver with almost 800 dives and have taken the Rescue Diver course - so I feel that I am semi-qualified to provide some input so people understand what can happen while diving.

Diving places the body under stress that is not yet fully understood ... because each person is different. Medical conditions, medications, fitness level, prior food/alcohol consumption all effect our bodies slightly differently. A great resource for divers that are older (or who have specific conditions) is DAN (Divers Alert Network).

Stuart Cove will have more deaths/incidents than any other dive facility in The Bahamas - BECAUSE they are the largest in terms of volume. They are professionally staffed and equipped properly. Divers should have no concern about choosing them to dive with!
