Flight takes British nationals back to London

A FLIGHT left Nassau yesterday taking British nationals back to London.

The flight, operated by British Airways, took 45 British nationals, tourists, short-term residents and direct dependents back to the United Kingdom. It was organised by the British High Commission in Nassau.

British High Commissioner Sarah Dickson said: “We have been working tirelessly with Bahamian and British Overseas Territories officials to arrange this humanitarian flight. Humanitarian flights that fly during this outbreak of coronavirus require additional measures to be in place to ensure the health and safety of passengers, crew and airport personnel. This flight complies with all the requirements. This was a one-way flight with no passengers disembarking in Nassau.”

The commission worked with Bahamian authorities, other officials in the UK and the government of Cayman to organise the flight.

Mrs Dickson added: “We are grateful for the support we received from the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bahamas Civil Aviation Authority and the Nassau Airways team. I am proud of the way British tourists have worked together in the family islands to arrange safe transport to meet the flight in Nassau. I would also like to thank the consular and political staff across the Caribbean who have helped us answer questions and support passengers.”

The High Commission continues to provide more updates through its social media channels on Facebook and Twitter.

There was a time that big jet from Britain would have been loaded with important medical supplies to help us out. But those days are long gone.

That the UK did not bring supplies shows that every country in the world is in the same boat. For the first time since Independence, The Bahamas is on its own.

What a missed opportunity! Empty flight could have brought tons of much needed face masks and respirators if someone had been organised!

This is not a show of solidarity it only proves that The Bahamas still have NO control whatsoever over its borders. Why are British Nationals and dependents still stuck in other countries while their borders are shut but can be transported from The Bahamas? Yes, it takes some pressure of the country not having to care for any of these persons if they fell ill at home BUT trust me this operation here, speaks volume about the integrity of our Nation. It means we have no teeth on the international stage.

I'm afraid all of our nation's teeth were pulled out of our nation's now begging mouth when Minnis first set foot on the world stage. First impressions are quite often lasting impressions and Minnis seldom makes a good first impression.

I'm just waiting to see what the trade off was for this initiative, better be something that brings great benefit to the Bahamians people during this time of crisis.

The Government should also arrange flights to bring Bahamians back home.
