THE Bahamas received another dose of Offshore Rib Rally racing March 25 - 31 when the high-speed inflatable raft races returned to Nassau/Paradise Island for the second time in two years. "The Bahamas received significant promotion from this event over the past year because it was broadcast in a number of European markets," said Anthony Stuart, general manager in the Ministry of Tourism & Aviation. "Last year's races were broadcast to European audiences, who saw nothing but beautiful, turquoise waters while viewing the programmes that were produced." According to Brando Booij, the race organiser, the beautiful water and racing scenery were some of the factors that got the races to return to The Bahamas. He said organisers were also pleased with the high standard of accommodations and marinas and the cooperation of the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation. Last year's races were broadcast on RTL, a Dutch commercial channel with affiliates across Europe. It was also seen on Motors TV, a European channel that is broadcast all over the world by satellite, said Brando. This year's races at various locations off Nassau/Paradise Island, Rose Island and Current Island, will also be recorded for broadcast. Earl Miller, the Ministry of Tourism's general manager for Vertical Markets, said events such as the Offshore Rib Rally are important to the Bahamas. They keep the scenic nature of the country in view of potential visitors and they also bring guests to The Bahamas to race or support racers, he said. The 2012 Offshore Rib Rally was won by Team Amsterdam.
