Olympics: Anthonique qualifies for 100, 200

By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net Anthonique Strachan came home and proved that she's fit and ready to compete this year. Strachan, who is now at Auburn training under coach Henry Rolle, led a series of outstanding performances in the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA) Colina Carifta trials at Thomas A Robinson Track and Field Stadium over the weekend. Pulling off the under-20 girls' sprint double, Strachan posted a pair of qualifying standards for the Olympic Games in London, England, while making the qualifiers for the Carifta Games in Hamilton, Bermuda, set for the Easter holiday weekend. In the 100 metre final, Strachan ran a blistering 11.22 seconds which easily surpassed the Olympic A qualifying mark of 11.29. It also went under the World Junior Championships' time of 11.96, the Junior Central American and Caribbean Championships' mark of 11.85 and the Carifta time of 11.90. Pulling off the win, Strachan out-sprinted her former St Augustine's College team-mate Shaunae Miller, who settled for second in 11.41, which went under all of the qualifying marks except the Olympics. Carmiesha Cox also strengthened the Bahamas' team for Carifta when she produced a third place time of 11.76, which also was a qualifier for all of the meets except the Olympics.
