THE Alexander Von Humboldt, the historic German tall ship, arrived in Freeport Harbour on Thursday. The ship will be permanently stationed in Grand Bahama as a new tourist attraction, offering visitors coastal cruises. The crew of the Alex made their final voyage across the Atlantic from Germany on Thursday to Grand Bahama. The crew will train 20 young Bahamian apprentices. Erika Gates, president of Grand Bahama Nature Tours, acquired the ship after learning that it was being taken out of commission and sent to a shipyard in Germany, where it would have been scrapped.
