FNM CANDIDATE for Montagu Richard Lightbourn said effective community building can only take place if every resident has a voice.

At a time when social ills are multiplying, Mr Lightbourn said, he is focused on strengthening communities to overcome these challenges.

"There is no doubt that a direct correlation exists between crumbling communities and the social ills that our communities are experiencing," the candidate said.

For this reason, creating direct avenues for the opinions and concerns of residents to be voiced and addressed must be central to any effort to rebuild the diverse communities in Montagu, he said.

"The views and ideas of the local community must be at the heart of running, planning and representing the affairs of constituencies," Mr Lightbourn said.

"Constituents are longing for communities where there is genuine concern and appreciation for its people.

"We must therefore see our residents as the assets that they are and be mindful of the fact that it takes each individual to make a community prosper.

"Establishing a genuine and regular dialogue between the various sectors of the communities - churches, schools, businesses and residents - will help create an environment where residents feel valued, empowered and safe," he said.

"With everyone's help Montagu can once again have communities that provide opportunities for its residents, especially its youth and those who are eager to make a contribution if only given the chance to be heard," said Mr Lightbourn.
