FREEPORT - Firefighters discovered the charred remains of a body among the debris of a burnt-out wooden house in Eight Mile Rock early yesterday morning.

While police have not released an identity, the body is believed to be that of a Haitian woman.

Shortly after 5am, the Police Fire Unit received a report that a house was ablaze on Jack Smith Corner, Hanna Hill.

The single story wooden structure was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

The victim's remains were found in the northeastern section of the building.

Asst Supt Loretta Mackey said the investigation into the fire is continuing.

Eight Mile Rock police are also awaiting the results of an autopsy after the body of an elderly black man was found in some bushes last week.

The man, who is believed to have been 69 years old, was discovered just north of the Sea Grape community around 6.30pm on Friday.

Asst Supt Mackey said residents of the area noticed a bad smell and alerted the police.

The death has not yet been classified; however police do not suspect foul play at this time.

In other news, the 19-year-old girl rushed to hospital a week ago after being hit in the head during an argument has died of her injuries in New Providence.

The girl is said to have died around 9pm on Thursday, April 5.

According to initial reports, officers were called to the North Coral Road area to investigate a grievous harm claim on March 28.

By the time they arrived, the teen had already been taken to the Rand Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle, but bystanders explained that she had been struck in the head and seriously injured.

Police have yet to release her identity and said that their investigation will continue.
