THE Bahamas inched closer to the top of the standings and was set to surpass last year's medal haul at the close of Saturday's competition at the BTC 2012 Carifta Swimming Championships.

With one day left today before the curtain comes down on the championships at the Betty Kelly Kenning Swim National Center, the Bahamas joined Trinidad & Tobago in a two-way tie for second place in the standings with 489 points. However, Guadeloupe increased their lead with a 146 advantage with 635.

Guadeloupe is also heading the 22 nation field in the medal hunt with a total of 50, inclusive of 19 gold, 16 silver and 15 bronze. Trinidad & Tobago trail by just eight with 42 after winning 19 gold as well with 13 silver and 10 bronze. The Bahamas sits in third with 11 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze for a total of 36.

Last year in Bridgetown, Barbados, the Bahamas finished third behind Guadeloupe and Trinidad & Tobago in the points standings and was sixth in the medal count with 41, including 12 gold.

The Bahamas started Saturday's competition with a gold from Albury Higgs in the girls 11-12 200 individual medley in a time of two minutes and 37.35 seconds. She won another in the 50 breastroke in 37.00. But after Dionisio Carey picked up a silver in the boys 13-14 50 breast in 32.64, the Bahamas went into a drought until the end of the night.

That was when Taryn Smith posted a silver in the girls 15-17 200 butterfly in 2:27.60 and Matthew Lowe struck gold in the boys 15-17 200 fly in 2:09.54.

"It was tough, but I did my best," Smith said. "I came through with my personal best and I got the silver, so I'm real happy. I'm very excited. We're just wracking up the medals. Hopefully we can finish in second place."

As for Lowe, he noted: "It was good. It was a hard race. It's one of the hardest races that we have, so it feels good to come first. The last 50 is always hard, so I'm happy that I won."

The Bahamas missed out on a medal in the first three 800 freestyle relays until the team of Dustin Tynes, Matthew Lowe, Anibal Hernandez Valdes and T'Auren Moss came through in the final race in the boys 15-17 division. They were second in 8:02.99 behind Trinidad & Tobago.

But before they could celebrate, the announcement came over the microphone of a disqualification of the Trinidad & Tobago team after their swimmers swam out of turn. That elevated the Bahamas on the medal podium to the gold as the national anthem appropriately brought the night to a close.

Martinique moved up from bronze to silver and Aruba secured the other spot with a third as they also inched up from fourth.

The championships will close out tonight with the final session, starting at 6 p.m.
