Host of events to mark Earth Day in Eleuthera

A HOST of events are taking place this weekend in Eleuthera to celebrate Earth Day.

The Jammin' For Nature weekend, under the banner of "Five Great Events, One Amazing Weekend", is presented by the One Eleuthera Foundation and partners.

Tonight, from 4-7pm, there will be a welcome beach party at the Beach House in Governor's Harbour.

The Nature Conservancy, the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and One Eleuthera will all be present at the party, where drinks and tapas will be served.

A featured artist, Barbara de Vries, of Plastic is Forever and the documentary One Beach, will be at the event, which costs $25 for admission.

There will also be a local street party featuring Bahamian cuisine on Anchor Bay Beach in Governor's Harbour, where visitors and locals will mingle to the sounds of DJ music.

Tomorrow, from 9am-1pm, a Heritage and Conservation Trail will see visitors touring the most intriguing sites on Eleuthera, from Preacher's Cave in the north to Lighthouse Point in the south. The tour includes a series of stops highlighting places of special conservation interest on the island and will use shuttle buses. The cover charge is $25.

From noon to midnight tomorrow, the One Eleuthera Cultural Expose will be held in Bay Front Park, in Governor's Harbour, featuring Eleuthera School Bands, a Junior Junkanoo and All Eleuthera Junkanoo Rush Out, The Sands Sculling Boats and more. The Sculling Regatta runs from 2-3pm, the launch of the One Eleuthera Foundation will be from 4-5pm and the final Sculling Races from 5-6pm.

On Sunday, from 7am-1pm, Birds, Bagels and Brunch will be the focus of events, with bird watching from 7-9am at the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve at Governor's Harbour, and brunch from 9am-1pm. Cover charge is $25. Guides will share their expertise in birding, bush medicine and the various plant species in the preserve.

Also on Sunday, there will be a Picnic for the Planet from 1-5pm at Receiver's Beach, Governor's Harbour. Cover charge $25.
