Quarter-miler Shaunae Miller

IT was an early start for Shaunae Miller and Team Bahamas today as our athletes continued to bid for glory in their London 2012 Olympics ‘super weekend.’

Shaunae was due to take part in heat 2 of the Women’s 400m at 7am today, Bahamas time.

She faced six other competitors including Christine Day, of Jamaica. If Shaunae was successful, the semifinals are tomorrow afternoon with the final on Sunday.

Two hours before Shaunae launched her bid, swimmer Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace was in the Women’s 50m Freestyle heats. The semifinals are at 3.20pm, with the final tomorrow.

And at 5.40am, our track and field campaign was due to start with the Women’s 100m Pre-lims, featuring Sheniqua Ferguson, Anthonique Strachan and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie.

Heats continue today with the semifinals and final tomorrow.

Bahamian athletes are lined up for a string of competitions from today until the end of Monday, including potentially six finals.

Raymond Higgs was set for the Men’s Long Jump today, with the final tomorrow. Runners were gearing up for the Women’s 100m, the Men’s 100m and 400m over the weekend. The Men’s 100m Final, which could feature Derrick Atkins and Warren Fraser, is at 4.50pm on Sunday.

The Men’s High Jump starts on Sunday, and the Women’s 100m Hurdles on Monday.

High Jump hopeful Donald Thomas Tweeted last night: “I bow my head, I pray to God! Survival of the fittest, help me hold my city Lord! Bahamas stand up!”

The Tribune wishes them all success.

THE Big T publishes as normal tomorrow, with all the latest on our Olympians. There will be no Tribune on Monday, but if our athletes win medals on Saturday, look out for a special FREE souvenir special distributed on Sunday.
