Residents' anger as trees protecting area are cut down

WESTERN residents are outraged after trees, that were specifically planted in the area by environmental experts, were reportedly cut down by a local business.

The New Providence Community Centre Church had funded the Orange Hill Beach restoration project several years ago when a variety of native foliage was planted in The Caves Point area after the removal of invasive plants that were growing in the area.

Environmentalist said the planting of the native foliage would help in slowing beach erosion as the roots of the native plants naturally hold sand in place better than other kinds of plants.

According to one resident, restoration project members consulted with environmentalist and dune restoration experts before planting a variety of trees, bushes, and grasses to “mimic a healthy dune system”.

However, a local bank has cut down the plants, allegedly in an effort to secure a better view of the ocean, leaving residents in the area fuming over what they believe to be a disregard for the environment.
