BSC SOFTBALL

POSTSEASON

WITH the shortened regular season completed, the Baptist Sports Council is slated to begin its postseason in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Tuesday night.

The sudden death playoff in both the co-ed and men’s divisions will be played between the first and fourth place finishers, while the second and third place finishers are all set to square off on Thursday.

The winners from the series will go on to play in the best-of-three championship that will be played on Saturday, along with the 19-and-under championship series.

In Tuesday’s opener, fourth place Salem Union Baptist will take on first place Golden Gates in their co-ed encounter.

Golden Gates went undefeated during the regular season In the men’s feature contest, fourth place Anointed to Reign Ministry will meet first place Golden Gates. Anointed to Reign Ministry handed Golden Gates their only loss during the regular season.

In Thursday’s opener, third place St John’s will square off against second place St Paul’s in the co-ed opener at 7pm.

That will be followed by the men’s feature game between second place Macedonia Baptist against third place St Paul’s Baptist in a showdown between two churches out of the Fox Hill community.

Macedonia won a slug fest 18-16 in their only encounter during the regular season.

As for the 19-and-under division, Macedonia will play against Golden Gates. Macedonia knocked off Golden Gates in the two games they played against each other during the regular season.

A number of games were played on Saturday as the regular season came to a close.

Macedonia co-ed defeated Evangelistic Temple 15-4, Macedonia men held off St Paul’s 18-16, St John’s co-ed routed Ebenezer Missionary Baptist 37-1, St John’s stopped Salem Union 12-1 and Salem Union got revenge by holding off Evangelistic Temple 29-18.

St John’s 37, Ebenezer 1

In the most lopsided game of the season, St John’s co-ed didn’t have any mercy as they batted around the clock three times in the first inning, scoring 12 runs before Ebenezer got the first out. St John’s went on to score six more runs for an early 18-0 lead. After Ebenezer got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame, St John’s again went around the clock three times in the second as they produced their final 18 runs.

Keishlyn Taylor, Torrin Rolle and Greg Smith all scored five times, while winning pitcher Marvell Miller, Jessica Stubbs and Dennis Johnson came home four times.

Ellis Adderley, the losing pitcher, scored the only run for Ebenezer.

3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored, Torri Rolle was 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs, winning pitcher Marvell Miller was 2-for-3 with a RBI, scoring a run and Greg Smith had a two-run homer to lead St John’s co-ed to another victory.

Dermontry Ferguson scored the only run for Salem. Deborah Bastian was the losing pitcher.

Macedonia 15, Evangelistic Temple 4

Ameriage Taylor had a solo homer, Shera Taylor scored three times, Courtney Smith had a two-run double, scoring two runs and Tim Clarke, Zhivargo Archer all scored two runs in Macedonia’s co-ed win. Rose Gomez was the winning pitcher.

Daniel Cash was 2-for-2 with a RBI, scoring two runs and Ariel Roker had two RBI,

Macedonia 18, St Paul’s 16

Zhivargo Archer was 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs, Courtney Smith was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs and Brian Capron, Akili Kemp and Trea Gilbert all had two hits and scored as many runs in Macedonia men’s win. Michael Ingraham was the winning pitcher.

Lynden Gaitor had a two-run and grand slam home runs, while Prescott Wilson had one hit, scoring three runs and Joey McDonald, Brad Wood Jr and Deval Storr all scored twice.

Salem 29, Evangelistic Temple 19

Aaron Wood was 4-for-5 with a two-run double, a RBI double, a three run homer and a grand slam to lead Salem in their co-ed slug-fest. Sam Bastian was 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored and Dermontry Ferguson was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer. Also Jessica Stubbs 3-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored. Cadwell Taylor Sr and Omar Glinton scored three times and Crystal Glinton came home twice.

Deborah Bastian was the winning pitcher and Donna Cash got the loss.

Fred Tapia was 2-for-4 with two RBI, scoring two runs, Dave Cash Jr had a pair of hits with a RBI, scoring twice and Danielle Cash was 4-for-5 with a RBI and two runs scored in the loss.

CHAMPION BOXING SHOW

THE Champion Amateur Boxing Club is scheduled to stage its regular amateur boxing show 6pm Saturday at the Wulff Road Boxing Square. The main event will be a match-up between Anton ‘the Beast’ Brown and Absalom Sturrup in a heavyweight title. Also, the club headed by Ray Minus Jr has announced that their 17th annual Ray Minus Sr End of the Year Boxing Day four day tournament is set for 6pm December 26-29 at the Wulff Road Boxing Square.

TENNIS

LUNN RECOVERING

JUSTIN Lunn, playing in the USTA Wildcard Tennis Tournament in Weston, Florida, had to retire in the first set of the semifinal match on Saturday at 4-3 due to a forearm injury. However, the therapist on site worked on him with the hopes of getting him ready to play in the USTA Pro Circuit Wild Card event in Sunrise, Florida. Lunn is seeded No.3 in the tournament. He got a bye in the first round and was scheduled to play to his second round on Sunday, but no results were available.

It has also been a rough week for Lunn and his coach Greg Russell off the court. Russell’s mother Patsy Russell passed away on Tuesday at the age of 81. During the early 70s, the deceased travelled to Nassau and throughout the region with her sons Greg and Compton Russell, who played Davis Cup for Jamaica and was sponsored by Bob Marley on the tour. She was known to players like Leo Rolle, John Antonas, Vicky Knowles, Carmel Knowles, Jane Wiberg, Don Cooke, Roger Smith, Mark Knowles and Kim Cartwright.

Condolences extended to the Russell family during their time of bereavement.

BASKETBALL

NPBA ACTION

WHILE the BTC Digitals barely held on for an 89-81 victory over the College of the Bahamas Caribs at the CI Gibson Gym on Saturday, the New Providence Basketball Association’s defending champions Commonwealth Bank Giants routed the Y-Care Wreckers 124-96.

For the Giants, Jackson Jacob led five players in double figures with a game high 25 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Ricardo Pierre had 23 points, Jeffery Henfield 20 points, six rebounds and four assists, Michael ‘Fernley’ Bain 14 points and Gamaliel Rose 12 points and 11 rebounds. Both Denykco Bowles and Rashad Gardiner added nine.

Salathiel Bain scored 19 points with 10 rebounds and Jamarise King also had 19 points in a losing effort for the Wreckers. Anthony Whylly scored 13 points, Mario Pickstock had 12 and Leon Bain 11.

In the Digitals win, Barry Carter paved the way with 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and five steals. Dannon Carter also had 16 points with four rebounds and four steals.

Stephen Culmer Jr had 15 points and nine rebounds, Lorenzo Carter had 12 points and Lloyd Bailey chipped in with 10 points.

In the loss, Earnal Monroe had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Caribs. Roland Horton had 14 points, Glen Davis had nine points, Gralyn Frazier and Kirkwood Williams both had eight, Reuben Gibson seven and both Rashad Saunders and Stefan McKinney added six.

The NPBA is scheduled to be back in action with another double header, starting 7:30pm today at the CI Gibson Gym.
