FAMILY Island schools made their presence felt in a major way, while GSSSA schools captured three divisions and a perennial powerhouse retained its title on championship night in the 28th Father Marcian Peters Basketball Classic.

The week-long tournament concluded Saturday at the Kendal Isaacs Gym with title games in each of the five divisions.

Harbour Island’s promising programme continued its undefeated dominance and closed out the title with championship wins in the primary boys and junior boys.

Harbour Island upstaged Catholic League champions Our Lady’s Blue Flames 27-19, while their junior boys won 21-9 over the TA Thompson Scorpions.

The HO Nash Lions prevented a third title for Harbour Island in the junior girls division with a 23-18 win.

In the primary girls division, the Temple Christian Suns captured their eighth title in the division with a 21-9 win over Freedom Baptist Academy.

In intermediate boys, CI Gibson won 40-33 over San Salvador, ended the Caciques bid for a third title and in senior girls, CR Walker won 28-25 over the TC Suns.

“The competition was neck and neck. All the teams played up to standard like we expected. There were a few surprises here and there, but for the most part everything held true to form based on last year’s results,” said tournament director Scooter Reid.

“The Family Island played up to the high level. The teams from San Salvador and Harbour Island are always strong. We are happy we had Exuma and the others, who too have done a good job.”

Reid said immediate plans for the 29th edition would include expanding the reach to have more girls teams.

“It is our intentions next tournament to have more girls play. Even though the games in the divisions for girls are good, we need to have more girls in the tournament. This was originally a girls tournament, so to have a decline in numbers in those divisions is a little disappointing,” he said, “So we would like to tell all the teams that will be playing next year, if they want to play they have to bring a girls team.”
