Golden Gates clinch co-ed title

GOLDEN Gates routed St John’s 39-25 in the third and deciding game as they clinched the co-ed title with a 2-1 series decision to bring the curtain down on the Baptist Sports Council’s 2012 Softball Classic in the Banker’s Field at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex on Monday night.

Richard Bain Jr went 5-for-6 with three home runs, a double and a single, driving in five runs and scoring five times in the clincher. The center fielder finished the series with a 10-for-12 outing at the plate with four homers, eight RBI and seven runs scored to earn the most valuable player award.

Golden Gates won game one of the series 9-8 as Vernice Penn had a run-producing double and Philip Johnson cracked a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth as they came from behind 8-6.

In the same dramatic come-from-behind fashion in the bottom of the fifth, St John’s evened the series at 1-1 with their 5-4 victory in game two. Detrice MCardy came through with a two-run double, scoring Gregg Smith and Donnette Edwards with the tying and winning runs.

Picking up the win, Golden Gates joined their men’s team that swept St Paul’s in two straight games on Saturday to secure the championship.

The other title in the classic went to Macedonia, which also pulled off a two-game sweep over Golden Gates for the 19-and-under title.

With the year’s activities completed, the BSC is now preparing for its 2013 Family Fun Run/Walk Race slated for 6am Saturday, January 27, starting from Charles W Saunders High School, Jean Street.
