AN 18-year-old woman became the first traffic fatality of 2012 after crashing her car into a wall early yesterday morning.
The incident occurred around 4.20am on Blue Hill Road, at the corner of St Vincent Road.
The victim was driving a green 1999 Honda Accord carrying two passengers, a male and female, when they collided with a red 2007 Ford Explorer, driven by a 46-year-old man.
Police believe the 18-year-old lost control of her car when she tried to overtake the Ford, smashing into a wall.
The driver suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her woman passenger was last night in hospital in a critical condition.
The male passenger and the driver of the truck were unharmed.
Police, who have not released the name of the victim, are investigating.
In 2011, the Bahamas recorded 10,563 traffic accidents, 44 of them fatal, according to statistics from the Royal Bahamas Police Force.
Of those accidents, 8,653 were in New Providence, 1,160 in Grand Bahama and 750 in the Family Islands.
Of the 44 traffic fatalities, 22 were in New Providence, 10 in Grand Bahama and 12 in the Family Islands.
Police are also investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a car at the intersection of Abundant Life Road and the East West Highway over the weekend.
The man was found shortly before 12.30am on Sunday morning in a black Nissan Maxima, with no visible signs of injury.

This is why safety precautions should always be implemented in high street as well as on accident prone areas. Based on surveys there are thousands of victims for car collisions. It is true that most accidents took place due to recklessness but with the proper car maintenance, drivers could avoid such thing. There are now automotive associations that deal with testing and emission of which are applicable to most automobiles. These have been quite a number of car accidents recently in our area, where a client at the car parts store has witnessed one car crash. There was one fatality, a male driver, who appeared to be a little intoxicated, according to the police. The rest of the vehicles that were crash upon were not severely damaged, and the drivers and passengers of these were unharmed. They were saying that in that exact same spot, a number of people have met some form of accident, sometime resulting to death or sever damages.

It is really a sad incident, the girl died at such an young age, but the accident was really fatal. Unless people drive their car within the right speed limit then more such accidents would occur. It was indeed a horrible incident, it really feels bad to learn that she died at such a young age. If people follow the road safety rules then it would become easier to avoid such fatal accidents.
