POLICE detained a 53-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman for questioning in connection with the discovery of some ammunition.

Police say officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit arrested the two Westridge Estates residents shortly before 9pm on Monday after conducting a search of a grey Nissan Altima on the corner of Nassau Street and West Bay Street. Active investigations continue.

Police also confiscated two firearms in two separate incidents Monday.

In the first incident, at around 7pm officers confiscated a shotgun along with ammunition from a property on Boyd Road. In the second, about an hour later, officers from the Mobile Division, acting on a tip, went to a property on Old Boat alley off Market Street. They discovered a flare gun, but no arrests were made.

According to Commissioner of Police Ellison Greenslade, 318 weapons and more than 5,000 rounds of ammunition have been taken off the streets so far this year.

Maybe is we had a competent police force so many would not find it neccessary to own illegal weapons...

I know if I livesd in Nassau I most definitely would own a handgun, no one can protect my family in this country, we have to do it ourselves. At least until we get a real police force. But for Greenslade to say UR is reducing crime only shows he is completely out of touch with reality and does not have the talent neccessary to run our force. Time to let Greenslade go and get someone else in, and if in a year they get no results they too should be fired and replaced.

The police in general are doing the best they can 70 percent of the time. Its when individuals take the law into their own hands the trouble starts. Just the other day residents complained about the police returning fire in a residential area but never considered thoses same men who shot at the police could have used that same weapon to rob, rape, car jack or home invade them. They (the police) are humans also and need the assistance of the public to complete their efforts. You commented that you need a gun but if you let the police know of a FRIEND whom have an illegal weapon along with every other citizen, you will see that you dont actually need one. Everyone needs to do his or her part if you want to be safe.
